Painted Rocks

Page: 1 | 2

My little pet cat rock. My first one.

A cat and a snake - what a combo!

I'm holding the cat rock in my hand to show you how small it is.

Here's a rock that I painted daisies on. It has a pointed bottom, so I put it in a mini terra cotta pot.

Here's another one of those "painting statues." I forgot the name of this bird (it's a long one), but all I know is that he's adorable. =) My sister, Rebekah, helped out by making a custom salt dough stand for this rock. I wanted something else rather than wood filler all the time.

I liked how this one turned out. I tried to add lots of detail into the lily's petals by adding little vein lines and the little feathers of the hummingbird. I thought I would try a different approach to rocks - make the rocks look like a painting statue. What a concept, eh?

This rock was just so beautifully shaped that it was just crying for pansies. My sister, Bernadette, helped me plan out this one. I was having trouble thinking of what to put on some rocks, and she suggested flowers for this one. It was originally going to be a pot instead of a basket, but I thought it looked too plain.

The other side of the pansy rock. I made certain that each pansy was unique. I randomized the colors so everything is bright and cheerful. The dark green background gives it depth.

This was made from following Lin Wellford's instructions in The Art of Painting Animals on Rocks book. I was always intimidated to paint this one. It looked so difficult. Then I found this perfect rock and decided to give it a try. It went through a lot of changes before I was satisfied. For instance, I did a perfect chalk drawing so I know where to put the head and such. I somehow painted over it (I forgot exactly what happened), so the head kept on changing as I added more features. I had the most fun with painting the fur strokes. It's a tiring process but it's still fun!

Here's a painting of a cow. Again, I followed Lin Wellford's step-by-step instructions in one of her books. I'm slowly developing my own style. :)
