New York Giants Yes folks it's the Giants of Tecmo, the stuff legends are made of. With the original legend himself, LT patrolling the field they get shut outs more often then not (as in they actually do, somewhere between 50-60% of the time in 2-player games, if you are talking 1-player season LT can go whole seasons without allowing a single point.), he is easily the fastest guy in the game. You cannot run on him, he is always at top speed and he makes passing nearly impossible. He is the Team, He is the Man. He is LT. This just can't be stressed enough. It should be noted that the Giants have even suffered from widespread Tecmo Parity that nobody likes to see. Meaning that yes, the Giants are vulnerable while on the road. Home is still the same old story for the NYG. Standard virtually unbeatable. Offence- A group that is just good enough to win, they will get you your 6-7 points each game and that is all you need with the Giants D. Their main player is Reliable Phil Simms. You feel comfortable with Simms, he is a top 5 QB and he always seems to be able to get the passes in there and not get picked, which is key when you have the Giants. His favourite target is blazing Mark Bavaro, the best TE in the game and second best Receiver. To keep the other team honest they have BoMo at RB, someone who commands attention with 2 solid running plays. He has surprisingly ability to take over games at times. LT- I mean Defence It's the same fucking thing, you just don't score points on LT, he is freaking LT. He can shut down any team and he single handily makes the Giants the best team in the game. Not only is LT god but other than him they have some good guys, Banks plays the opposite side LB and he actually gets used more then you’d think, and then at RE they have Marshall who is valuable at times as well. If anyone ever does manage to get by LT they aren't getting far because the Giants D just wraps up every guy better than anyone else, it is frustrating when you play them, finally get by LT and then a diver gets you for a measly 5-yard gain. Special Teams- Their KR is brutal, he never does anything good. And their Kicker is one of the worst got to be inside the 40 to hit a FG, but the rest of the unit is the best in the game. They have the best punter in the game, and this is mega key, it means the Giants never give up bad field position, and since it is impossible to drive the field against the Giants, it means the Giants really never give up points. Then they have the best Kick off coverage too, it is rare to get it out to the 30 against the giants, very rare, so they never give up field position. And one other small thing, LT BLOCKS FG's, (I repeat LT BLOCKS FIELD GOALS.) any FG attempt outside the 10-yard line LT will block, it is insanity almost to the point that it is unfair, and it would be if it was anyone but LT, he can also block extra points from time to time which is even more insane. LT Says: "Yeah I Block Field Goals" Playbook- Not a great playbook, mostly because of pass 1, its curls, a few teams have it and it sucks, you have to throw right away or not at all, a pass that requires decisive Quarterbacking and a little guts. Their O is based on great pass 2, but because that is the only pass it is easy for the other team to pick it. Both their runs are effective if not called. Best Player- Between blocking nearly all FG's and thus making it impossible to score and picking off every bad pass and stopping the run with ease, and being God, LT is their best damn player and the most dominating player in the game, hell in the freaking universe. LT. So to recap, the Giants are pretty good and so is that LT guy. Miscellaneous- The NYG are THE team to be in a head-to-head situation. It takes an expert player and some great playing for the Giants to lose, and only a handful of teams stand chance vs. LT and Co. Denver, San Fran and Chicago are the only teams with realistic hopes of beating New York. It should also be mentioned that the Giants own LA so badly it is classic. Call Pass 1 and be Banks, LA can't go more then about 4 yards. Los Angeles The New New Jesus, is there one out there? If there is could you send him in the direction of LA. They got a new Jesus to save them and that isn’t helping them out much so they need something else. Anything short of finding a New New Jesus is going to leave LA right where they are, at the bottom of the league with the likes of MIN and WSH. You say, what has happened, what has gone wrong, don’t they have Bo Jackson? Well yes, they do have Bo Jackson, and yes Bo Jackson knows First downs, Td’s and winning. Unfortunately LA doesn’t know shit, and by shit I mean blocking. So what Bo knows doesn’t usually factor into the end result of a game. Offence- The best offensive players in the game bar none. The Best: Bo Jackson has to platoon at RB with hated Marcus Allen. Marcus also gets to be a part of both passing plays. Then they have underrated Tim Brown as the #1 WR and TE Christiensen best at his position in the game next to Bavaro. Their QB is lack lustre but with their amazingly awesome spread out plays that doesn’t factor in much. So what does all this talent add up to? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Because of a Minnesota/Washington like non-blocking flaw it has been discovered that you do not have to call Bo to stop Bo (rare Blasphemous stuff from Tecmo). Basically if you be an top outside linebacker you can call pass and not be picked up on either run, because you are opposite side of the field on Run 2 and because no one blocks that guy on Run 1. This means the offence goes nowhere and the team is dead. Defence- Still a not good defence, not much to say about them. They have New Jesus who is the go to guy. That’s not a great situation; he is more up and down than Pamela Anderson on Prom night. The other options are a decent safety and their C who you obviously cant be much. All of this means you are dealing with a bottom 4 D. They do have the ability to play well but can also get smoked out of the stadium. The New Jesus Special Teams-An ok unit. Tim Brown has settled in at KR, by settled in I mean he gets to the 20-30 but rarely better than that, once every hundred games you can ask for a KR and get it which is more than you can say about most returners. On the defensive side you rarely see them give up a big return, overall they have to be considered one of the more solid defensive teams. As for kicking and punting there isn’t anything to say, both are average, neither hurt your or help you that much. Best Player-Well their best player is Bo Jackson by a long shot. But their team sucks; if you want to give out an MVP I guess it has to go to Tim Brown or Howie Long since they are the only hope. Either Howie holds them to 0 points and you win 3-0 or Tim Brown gets a return for you to get points and you win that way, that’s the only hope. Playbook- I don’t know whether to sing its praises for being the best in the game or say it is shit because it leads to the flaw which ruins the team. Overall they have the best passing plays in the game, only the Indy passes even come close. Then they have 2 good running plays. Aside from the fact the team cant move the ball, the playbook is awesome! Miscellaneous- What used to be far and away the most fun team to play with has now become the borderline least fun. Sure its always less fun to play with Min and Wsh but nobody likes them anyways. If you have to play a game with LA you are constantly thinking about how dominating your team used to be and how fun and awesome this game should be since you have LA but its not. You have a terrible team with no hope and you are just putting in your time until you lose. Shameful stuff. Washington Washington, Hated Washington - Yes, they are hated, ever want to find out why? Just play this unspectacular group of saps late in the season against the computer and watch them stomp you despite no stand out players at all, it’s ridiculous, insane and unbelievable all at the same time. If you notice that big fork sticking out the back of Washington it's because they are fucking done. Officially a perma-bottom 3 team in the game. Offence- Brutal. Very bad and brutal. They have no standouts, they have the worst plays and they simply don't get the job done. Timmy Smith is the RB, he is decent enough but he only gets one play because of the WR reverse they have as the other play. The Reverse is a bad play, against any most team it is useless, it only has a chance to do a little bit against a small group of teams. Their QB has an average arm and isn't that good but if you press it he can land some close passes. Their only good play on offence is Pass 2, which has a deep threat and a couple short men, but this play is very risky and often gets picked. If you’re hurting for some points with Washington you best be putting on some Joe Cocker and watch them come alive. Alive meaning 3 points, a big showing for the worst offence in the game. Defence- Planning on running? Think again. Walter Payton can’t even run on this team if they don't want him to. Manley is the fucking run assassin. From the RE spot he kills all running plays, just pick the run directed at him and he will stop the other one for at most a 1-yard gain every time. They also have Mann on the other end that is comparable to Manley, then they got Green a decent safety that you usually never need to be. Overall it is one of the top defences in the game and is what keeps Washington alive in most games as their O consistently goes 3 and out. The Run Assassin Special Teams- Green also doubles a KR, and a pretty good one, he has good speed but never seems to be able to break out really big returns. Their coverage on kicks is pretty awesome and they should never give up a huge gain. Their punter is one of the better ones in the game, which helps, but their kicker is below average, and they could use a good kicker with their O. Best Player- Their whole team functions because of Manley, playing against this guy is not fun at all, he will kill your run which forces you to pass a lot and makes you get your play picked a lot more often. Manley is the team Miscellaneous- Washington used to put the fear in teams before stepping on the field since THEY ARE PURE BLACK for god sake, how can you compete with guys that are pure black? But have recently become the undisputed bottom 3 team in the game and really don’t scare anyone anymore. San Francisco All the talent in the world but because of one play they require substantial skill to operate on offence. They have awesome personnel, Ronnie Lott on D, probably the second best guy; on O they have Montana and Rice chewing it up as well as good secondary players in Craig and Wilson. But pass 1 hurts them. Offence- Joe Montana is the second best QB in the game, awesome arm and great running skills, he also has the best target in the game, unstoppable Jerry Rice who can deke out anyone, fastest WR in the game, it’s like having Bo Jackson at WR. But their plays hurt them, if the defence picks pass 1, it will cover Jerry Rice on pass 2 and 3 leaving only crappy guys open and making it easier to defend, and it will cover 2 guys including Rice on pass 3, so Rice NEVER gets the ball and their passing O is reliant on quick passes or Craig on Pass 3. And they only have 1 running play so if you can stop Craig without calling run then you are set. There are a few teams who excel at this and SF have to battle to beat. Defence- Ronnie Lott is awesome. He is blazing fast and shuts down the run totally as well as being too fast to pass on; this gives SF one of the best D's in the game. They really have no one else to be other than Lott though and he is a safety so they always get poor coverage on passes. They’re only other good player is Carter, he is super fast, but because he plays center he is basically unusable. Scoring points against SF is tough. Special Teams- They feature the games 3rd best punter, a great asset. They also have spectacular coverage, other than that they have a poor return game and average kicker. Best Player- It is really Rice, but because he doesn't even have to catch a pass if the D doesn't want him to it becomes Lott. Since their O stinks he holds it all together but limiting the other team to very few scores a game.
Miscellaneous- One of the Original 4 Elite teams (NYG, CHI, SF, LA in that order), SF has been All over the map, all the way to Shit City, population San Fran to Tecmo Mega Power. SF is now considered a top-flight team capable of winning a championship. Seattle Seattle is gay, used to be gayest team in the game. They feature the pinkest jerseys in world's history, crap players and one RB named Curt Warner, nobody likes Seattle. Offence- Their offence is very productive. They have a RB that must be respected (his game, not his name); he is one of the faster backs in the game. And their passing plays are very spread out which makes them super hard to stop. Their QB is not very good at all so they need the passes as spread out as they are. Seattle is like Indy with talent. They have Largent as their top WR, he is rated second best in the game. Over rated but still very good and can burn the other guy deep. Overall their offence is very tough to stop without lots of play calls. Fred-Fred Young is the man in Seattle, he has a monstrous 18 rating and he plays like it, controlling the entire field and scaring opposing QBs, he is probably one of the top 5 defenders in the game. Other than him they don't really have many options, they have Easley at Safety but he isn't that good, because of this it is a good thing that Young plays MLB, a very good position to be. Because of Young their D can be very solid in the game. Special Teams- Edmonds has a big rating but really doesn't perform like it, you would expect more from him, but you just never get nothing. They have decent coverage on kick, although they have been known to give up Pruitt returns, their kicker one of the 2 worst in the game so you must be inside the 40 to hit a FG and their punter is easily second worst. All of this makes for Weak Special Teams. Best Player- Their main player is Young; he is a solid guy on defence that anchors the team. No one on offence ever does anything spectacular; it's mostly all about Young. Denver In the beginning they were only an above average team, thought to be able to pick on the weak and have an edge over the ordinary. Then they fell off the map, it seemed as if they couldn't win, Denver couldn't get it going. But John Elway wouldn't have any of that; he now has them as one of the leagues top teams, top 4 or 5 because of a balance on O and D. Offence- Their O is much like Cleveland's, only more explosive. Led by the passing attack of John Elway (AKA The Definitive Maniac of Our Time) they seem unstoppable at times. The man that makes the team is Dorsett, he is a Hall of Famer good enough to make the opponent have to respect the run and that leaves Elway's targets open. If Dorsett gets loose it is easy for him to turn 15-20 yard gains in. The passing attack relies on great pass 1, and some mixing in of pass 2, a shotgun play. The worst aspect of the offence is their worst WR in the game, by far the slowest group, its almost painful to watch, if they had 1 or 2 guys with decent speed then almost every passing play would go for a first down, but they are so slow they get caught right after they get the ball. Defence- One thing that helped turn the team around was the emergence of MLB Mecklenburg. He is now considered one of the top defenders in the game and leads a more than steady defence. Other than him they have Jones at RE with a 9 rating, he is better than his rating would indicate and that is good since in some games it is necessary to be him instead of Mecklenburg. Overall their D has the ability to shut teams down and usually forces other teams to play catch up because of the high-powered O. Special Teams- They have a decent KR in Bell, he usually doesn't do much but does have a TD to his name. Other than him their ST are pretty brutal. They have the worst punter in the game; this is not a good thing to have, because of him they consistently give up field position to other teams and start with crappy field position for themselves. Their kicker is below average too and you can't try anything over 40 with him. A weak group. Best Player- All of Mecklenburg, Dorsett and Elway are important to the team and usually everything hinges on if Dorsett can run or not, but Elway is clearly the heart and soul of the team and with out him they aren't winning anything, it's nice have John Elway on your side. Chicago Chicago is a powerhouse, they have a top 3 O and top 3 D, and they make it hard on every team to beat them and have a chance against everyone. They also have the second best offensive and defensive players in the game. Combine these things to get one hell of a team. Generally considered #2 only to the NYG. Offence- The offence is Walter Payton. He has 2 running plays that can break out for 30+ yards at any time and he is also in on one passing play. The D will key on the run because they have to avoid huge Payton runs, so the most popular play is the dump off to Payton, just feed it to him and watch him go. He can deke out any defender that isn't top notch. Their passing game is alright as well; they have a mediocre QB and a good WR in Willie Gault. They have 2 deep routes on both their passes so it is a good idea to go deep if you got the balls. A predictable offence that can overcome thanks to talent. The-The 4-3 defence hurts Chicago as it takes away a lot of Singletary's effectiveness. It single-handedly makes the second best (possibly) defender in the game nearly useless. Mike Singletary plays MLB and because of that he is right in the middle and gets picked up by blockers on almost every run, so you can’t be him, you instead have to be Deverson, or failing that Mongo. Deverson plays Safety and is one of the best at it in the game, combine his speed with the overall greatness of the Chicago D (Mongo McMicheal, Richard Dent, The Fridge!!!), and you have what is arguably the second best D in the game Special Teams- Probably the best special teams in the entire game. They have the #1 KR man who must be feared by nearly everyone, Mike Gentry. He is very fast and can go for a TD at any time. (We got him clocked at about 1 every 6-7 games in Man vs. Man games, with the unique penchant to do it when it counts most. Bastard.) They also have exceptional coverage on kicks, probably second best. Their Kicker is the second best in the game and can hit from the 44. The only guy that isn't awesome is their punter who is one of the worst ones but not so brutal he kills you. Playbook- Chicago has a good playbook, 2 outside runs to Payton and one very good dump off pass that is their main play, if they had a real pass 2 then they would be about 50% better. Pass 2 is only effective vs. Run 1 defence, and even then it is an INT-able play for the defence. Best Player- Their Main guy is Payton, he is the 4th best RB in the game and really cannot be stopped without tons of picking run, so you need to get the passing game going and then let Payton loose for 30 yards back breaking gains that win you the game. Indianapolis Indy is not the worst team in the game. It all starts with their brutal QB who lobs the ball 15 feet in the air on every pass. Their defence is adequate, they have the 2nd highest shutout percentage but allow quite a few points when they don’t get a SHO, the team’s highlight is all-star RB Eric Dickerson. Offence- A powerhouse offence based on the play of Eric Dickerson and The unstoppable pass attack. Their QB is so brutal that they have trouble going deep on anyone and can only settle for short passes. The only thing that saves Trudeau is how spread out their 2 passing plays are. They are both excellent and give their terrible QB a chance to complete some passes. Anyone playing against Indy has to focus on Dickerson, he is the 2nd or 3rd best back in the game, and possibly the second best at dekeing, and this leaves them open for a lot of passing plays. Despite being so damn fast Dickerson never seems to break out much, this is party due to the fact he is always keyed on and partly due to the fact that Indy gives him terrible shameful blocking. Defence- A decent unit that is middle of the pack, their top player is Bickett with a 12 rating, and he is a tinge overrated. The other option is Odom at MLB but he has a brutal 2 rating. If the other team has a good RB he can consistently deke out your defender, which is devastating. You must rely on excellent play calling, and ingenuity with the Indy D. It's a working class defence. Special Teams-A very strong unit, might be the best in Tecmo. Their return game is ordinary, Bentley has a pretty good rating but never gets anywhere, he isn't that fast and gets average blocking. The punter is top notch – and really helps Indy out. Biasucci, the best Kicker in the game, able to hit 45-46 yard FG's, and is one of the teams’ best weapons. The highlight however is their FG blocking, they are 1 of 2 teams in the game that can block FGs from outside the 30, Bickett forces teams to kick FG's from inside the 30 only. This really helps IND up their SHO%. As a whole, Indy's special teams are no worse then 2nd. Playbook- Overall it is a very heroic playbook. They have 2 normal runs, which is good because they have Dickerson. Then they have 2 excellent passes, both of them are super spread out and virtually impossible to stop without calling them. Best Player- Their best player is Eric Dickerson; this guy is a speed demon, second only to Bo and Payton for speed and possibly better than Payton at cuts. This makes him a very dangerous weapon, giving Indy a chance vs. better teams. Cleveland A team built around stingy defence and a ball control slow moving but steady offence, Cleveland is a challenge for anyone to play; they can beat top teams and can pound on the lesser teams. On top of their overall steadiness they also have great special teams that help them immensely. Offence- They have no super stars on offence, they just have a few guys who can get the job done. Mack is a decent back who is always part of the game, his best asset is his strength, he is one of the toughest, he can shake anyone off, even a human defender if they are not trying hard, plus he can popcorn diving guys and just run right through others. At QB they have Bernie Kosar, he is very reliable and has a very strong arm, the 4th best in the game. Their main success comes from their unstoppable pass 2, pass 1 can also be mixed it and Mack is good enough that you can consistently run the ball. Defence- One of the stingiest units in the game, they are arguably third best. They are lead by Hanford Dixon, their Dynamo Safety. He is great at stopping the run and so fast that he can scare QBs into not throwing. Other than him they only have Minnifield the other safety, besides that they really have no one else with good rating. This is surprising because they get such great coverage on passing plays, that is one of the things that makes Cleveland's D so awesome, their inexplicable awesome coverage. This limits the QBs choices and with Dixon on the field that makes it nearly impossible to throw. Special Teams- Their return man is the second most prolific KR in the game. McNeil is sometimes unstoppable, his blazing speed usually always allows a return out to at least the 30 and leaves the opponent in fear of a TD. They have a decent punter who is good enough to get the job done for them. Their kicker is a little above average and can hit from about the 42, which is nice to have. Another advantage they have is great coverage. Their cover guys are so quick that sometimes they can get down the field and tackle the returner before the 15, but if the first wave of guys miss then they could be in trouble, they have some of the most up and down coverage in the league. Playbook- Their playbook is unspectacular except for Pass 2. They have 2 ordinary runs that get the job done. Their pass 1 is very useful against some teams but the big problem with it is that there is always pressure on the QB from it. Their money pass is Pass 2, where one guy drops short and one goes very deep, it just allows them to keep dumping off to the short man all the way down field if they choose. Best Player- Their team leader is definitely Dixon; he is the captain of the D and their only real standout. He is one of the top defenders in the game, without him their D might be only ordinary. Minnesota Gaying teams out is Minnesota’s specialty. They end up being one of the worst teams in the game, and the gayest. This is despite having some decent talent. Their D can be pretty good but their O is submarined by the useless WR reverse play and Leo Lewis' lack of heart. Offence- The centerpieces of this O are their WR, the second fastest bunch of guys in the game, no one is slow, and they got the second fastest WR in the game. Their RB is not brutal, good enough but only 1 play hurts him. Their QB is one of the worse guys in the game but he isn't so bad you can’t force a pass. Their best play is pass 2, it is risky but can work, pass 1 is also good but you get too much pressure on you for it to be reliable. Minnesota has a very hard time getting points, all because of useless WR Reverse. Beware Minnesota’s Gay Hidden Blockers of Doom and Gayness on Run 1. Overall the 2nd worse offence in the game. Their-Their D is pretty solid; Browner is the star at safety and does a solid job. RE Doleman can also chip in with some strong defensive play and can help the D hold the opponent to very few points, which is desperately needed in order to give their O time to gay the other team out. Special Teams- Their KR is Carter, rated 4th best, the man who is their best WR, he does alright but not enough to save the team, it is likely because of the blocking. Other than him there isn't much to say, their punter is one of the worse guys, their kicker is strong and their coverage is not brutal but not good. Playbook- It's a decent playbook made god awful because of the addition of the reverse, it cripples them to no end. Their passes are good enough to get the job done, and if they just had 2 running plays they maybe they could knock off a good team once in a while, but they are stuck at lowly 2nd worst as it stands now. Best Player- Undoubtedly Browner is the star. Without him they are hurting, he is the only thing that lets them keep it close, he makes their D respectable and gets their lousy O the ball back quick fast and in a hurry. No one does more with less than Browner does, except maybe Dixon. Dallas How do I describe Dallas? I believe god-awful is the best way to. They have one player, Herschel Freakin' Walker, other than that they got nothing. Herschel-Herschel Walker is a monster, too bad the other player will be doing nothing but picking Walker because their passing game is so horrendous. They have the second worst QB, who is so easy to pick off and some pretty slow WR. The only play that they can go to is Pass 2, their shotgun play where Herschel Walker is a WR; you end up dumping off to him 90% of the time. Dallas can really bust some heads if they can work in Pass 1, as in be totally unstoppable. A top-notch offence if you can get a good mix going, which can prove difficult. Defence- The worst D in the game, unlike any other team they don't have a single good player. The only 2 guys they got are The Jeffcoats and veteran Francis at RE and Safety respectively, they both blow and neither of them can stop a speedy RB. They also play the crappy 4-3 defence, which only a few teams do, this is much shittier than 3-4 and it really hurts a team that already blows. Special Teams- They have no return game to speak of and have very poor coverage, actually the worst coverage in the game. Just always expect to get one returned on you at the end of the game when you just fought hard to take the lead. They also have a below average punter and a good kicker who can hit good-sized FGs. Playbook- They actually have a pretty good playbook, 2 good runs to walker and a good pass 2, their pass 1 is pretty brutal because the WR park beside each other for easy picks. But with a real QB and this playbook they could be doing some damage. Best Player- Walker is their most talented player by a mile; no one else even remotely resembles anyone that has skill. So that is what makes it so easy to just pick run every time and not let Walker hurt you. If the offence isn’t going good Dallas is dead. Miami Miami is Dan Marino. Without him they are nothing, with him they have a totally unstoppable offence. Sadly, even Dan cannot make this a top-notch team because of their pathetic defence that cannot stop anything. Dan-Dan Marino commands a team with 3 passing plays at their disposal. He has the biggest cannon in the game and is nearly impossible to pick off unless you are standing right on the WR. Their running game is pretty decent against some teams, although Hampton is the worst back in the game, the only thing that saves them is that they get mega blocking, just depends on the team they are playing. Their WRs are also pretty good; Super Duper is the top man and gets most of the passes. They also have Clayton at the bottom who is a just as good as Duper. Miami can drive the field quicker then any team in the game. Defence- Terrible. No hope of stopping anyone, all you can rely on is play picks. They are one of the worst in the game, 2nd worst. Their only player is Offerdahl and he is nothing special at all, he plays MLB but can be consistently deked. The only other option is their RE Bosa who only has a 7 rating but isn't a game-breaker. Expect teams to walk all over you offensively so it is totally up to Marino to keep the game close. Special Teams-Pruitt is their return man, and he is brutally slow with poor stats, but sometimes he seems to be able to just break out returns past the 50, usually on the opening drive to kill the entire game, all the credit for that must go to the blocking. Their punter is one of the best, top 3 or 4; they usually don't need a great punter though because the O moves the ball so well. Their kicker is one of the worst, he can only hit from the 39, 40 if you stretch it, it is crippling sometimes but not so much with Miami. Playbook- They have a playbook that is designed well for them, because their running back sucks it really benefits them to have 3 passing plays and only 1 running play. This gives Marino the chance to take control of the game. The passes they do have are only average, but it doesn't matter because Marino is such a monster, if they do have one really good play it is their awkward shotgun play where many guys are criss-crossing. Best Player- Their entire team is based on the play of Dan Marino, you know you are passing almost all the time, and your opponent knows it too, and he still can't stop you, you can't understand how great he is until you see him rifle a pass in to a WR standing right behind a defender, something only he can do, without Dan, Miami is nothing. |
