The
team that has achieved so much was part of the past. Fernando
Cavallieri had to cope with the transition in 1991, but the
following year the club had the necessary budget to make up
a team that could go after the lost glory.
10 new players arrived to Cobreloa: Leonardo Canales, Juan C.
Almada, Pedro Jaque, Hugo Gonzalez, Fernando Cornejo, Marcelo
Miranda, Norberto Retamar, Jaime Vera, Carlos Fuentes and Andres
Roldan.
Internal conflicts and the elimination from the Apertura Cup
despite not having lost a single game (the elimination came
through penalty kicks) made Cavallieri and Almada leave the
team. But when the National Tournament was just beginning, Jose
Sulantay added his touch. His first task was to unite the group,
affected with conflicts between the new and the old players.
A vitoryover Palestino in Calama and a loss against Union Espanola
in Santiago were the beginning of Sulantay (in the first game,
Cobreloa lost to Colocolo in Santiago with Mario Osben, the
goalkeeper, as the coach). But from then on, the team remained
unbeaten for 27 games with and efficient and all-proof way of
playing.
The arrival of Edgardo Fuentes and Ramon Perez gave fresh air
to the team, which after beating Colocolo on September 18th
(with an antological goal by Hector "Ligua" Puebla)
started to believe that the title was just a step away.
The afternoon of December 13th was the final touch to such and
spectacular campaign. With goals scored by Covarrubias, Perez
and Vera, Cobreloa defeated Fernandez Vial and won the chanpionship.
Cobreloa formed a team to be champions, and it it responded
to the expectations.
