Cobreloa 1985

Jorge Toro, the coach
1985: A Title without the Libertadores
The team that lost the title in 1984 (when it was easier to win it than lose it) was changed a great deal. Many players were transferred to other teams and Cobreloa obtained its 3rd title with a team without many big names.

Cantatore left Cobreloa to coach the Chilean National Team, but the chaos reigning in the Football Association left Cantatore with empty hands. Cantatore recommended Jorge Toro to coach the team and he became Cobreloa's new coach. The task was more than hard: no big names and historic players --like Mario Soto-- leaving Cobreloa.

Despite all the obstacles, Cobreloa went on getting points until the last game in Arica. In their own stadium, Cobreloa sent the local team to Second Division, and killed the hopes of Everton, the team that until the last moment fought for the title.

In a historical decision of the ACF, Cobreloa could not go to the Libertadores Cup. It had to play definition games against the runner-up of 1984 --Cobresal--, which in the end got the right to take part in the continental tournament.
