1989: Goodbye to the Home Invicto

The players that had given many memorable moments to Cobreloa's fans were shooting their last shots. For the same reason, the 89' Libertadores was only acceptable for Cobreloa.

The first round was against Colocolo, and against Olimpia and Sol de America (Paraguay). Three victories, two ties and one loss placed Cobreloa on the top of the group.

In the second round (round of 16), Cobreloa faced Deportivo Quito (Ecuador), an spectacular team that almost got a point in Calama, if it not were for an own-goal by Ruiz. Previously, Cobreloa had tied in Quito, so Cobreloa qualified to the quarter finals.

But then Danubio came in the quarterfinals. The young uruguayan team seemed to have the strength of Nacional and Penarol together, which resulted in a victory in their visit to Calama (thus becomig the first team to beat Cobreloa in Calama for the Libertadores Cup). In Uruguay, the talent of Trobbiani was not enough to overcome the situation.
