Championship Manager Diary - August 2000

Tuesday 1st August 2000
Damn, missed out on the Leicester deal. They refused to up their bid. Oh well, there's still Spurs and Juve.

Saturday 5th August 2000
Here we are the big kick off, things get a little more serious now.
I've kept the same staring line up as the friendlies apart from McGarry coming in for Robbie Winters.

Lg. Result
Dundee 2 - 4 Aberdeen

What a cracking start to the season, McGarry scored on his debut and my other young striker Derek Young continued his great pre season form grabbing another two goals and the MOTM award for the 3rd time in three games.

Second in the Scottish Premier League, but its early days. Best not get excited, eh?
The Board of Directors are absolutely delighted with 4-2 victory over Dundee Utd. Well I should think so!

Thursday 10th August 2000
After a quiet week, its back into action. The toughest test so far. FC Kobenhaven away in the UEFA cup qualifying round.

UEFA Cup result
FC Kobenhaven 1 - 2 Aberdeen

Great performance, controlled the game,  and despite going one nil down early in the second half, fought back to win 2-1. The first of many great European nights for Aberdeen?

Rangers bid 2,000,000 for youngster Kevin McNaughton. I've decided to negotiate because I need as much money as possible.

Sunday 13th August 2000
Rangers return with an offer of 1,000,000 plus Finnish midfielder, Tero Pentilla. I've decided to delay my decision, because I'm unsure how good this Finnish player is and whether or not I should ask for 3,000,000 in cash because thats what id rather have.

Lg. Result
Aberdeen 1 - 0 Dunfermline

Steve McGarry scored the only goal and was Man of the Match.

Thursday 17th August 2000
We've been drawn to play Hearts in the League Cup third round. The game will played at Pittodrie so I fancy our chances for that one.

Saturday 19th August 2000
League game Vs St Johnstone away. Only change to starting line up is Robbie Winters in for the injured Derek Young.
Wow what a game! Two apiece from McGarry and Winters, and a strike from stavrum, cancel out four from St Johnstone.

Lg. Result
St Johnstone 4 - 5 Aberdeen

That win put Aberdeen two points clear at the top, the board are encouraged at the start I have made as
Manager.

Sunday 20th August 2000
Rangers want a decision over the McNaughton transfer. I decline because I want money rather than a player exchange. This alerts Manchester United, Leeds and Arsenal.

Thursday 24th August 2000
Second leg of the UEFA cup qualifying round tie with FC Kobenhaven. I'm looking good to go through as I lead 2 -1 from the first leg and I have two away goals.

Bloody hell what a game. Kobenhaven dominated for 70 minutes. Then I was awarded a penalty which Belabed tucked away for 1-0 (3-1 agg), 3 minutes later sub Paul Bernard doubled the lead to 2 - 0 (4-1 agg) and seemingly put the tie beyond doubt. Then Kobenhaven scored twice in the last few minutes to make it 4-3 on aggregate. It was a very nervy last few minutes because if they'd have scored to make the game 2 -3 they would have gone through on away goals.

UEFA Cup qualifying round result
Aberdeen 2 - 2 FC Kobenhaven (4 - 3 agg)

Never the less were through and thats all that matters.

Friday 25th August 2000
Hmm, a bit of a tough tie in the UEFA cup 1st round draw. Espanyol of the Spanish Premier League. First Leg in Spain. I'm not too confident of our chances for that game, it will be certainly be a test.
