| About Plato's Republic |
The dialogue recorded by Plato in the Republic took place right after the tragedy at Syracuse, around 412B.C. Socrates had gone down with Glaucon to the Piraeus to pray to the new goddess Bindis. Before he could leave, he was stopped by Polemarchus and forced to talk to a group of people. This conversation went on through the night, and the men never even ate dinner. The next day, Socrates repeated the entire discussion to Plato. The more fascinating thing is that Plato didn't even record what Socrates had said until twelve years later, in 399B.C.- the Peloponnesian War was over and Socrates had already been executed. Was this Plato's way of striking against the Athenian government, showing them that the killed the wisest man ever?
