The Afonja Community already has a social work which can be
seen at its school - Eugenia Anna dos Santos School - its museum
- Ile Ohum Lailai Museum - its choir - Faraimara -
its library etc. This Project aims to develop this work creating
some workshops (recycling papers, doll making, computing, wood
work, dance, percussion etc) based in a methodology which sees
freedom as the fundament of social-cultural changes towards democracy,
learning of professional skills, equal opportunities and respect
to human rights.
This community has already 97 years. It trys to act among
poor children and teenagers developing skills in areas as: music,
painting, crafts etc, all of them based on african tradition.
The Project - Children in Danger Afonja Community - is an
educational project which pretends to work with children and
teenagers towards the development of professional skills, a work
carried on together with the School Eugenia Anna dos Santos.
We intend to bring discussions on afro-brazilian issues, citizenship
and children rights.
We have seen that there is a lack of reflection on important
issues related to the subjects quoted above even among teachers
and instructors. There is an urgent need of meeting programms
to discuss points which are fundamental in the day-to-day of
the community.
Problems of relationship, individual problems besides the
social problems already known by all, make it every day even
more difficult to adolescents of poor communities to integrate
temselves into the large society: violency inside and outside
of house, low life contitions, control of emotions, poor education
are just some of the great problems they face.
We want to state that these days, the traditional means of
education are not enough to face the demands of these communities.
We must take new educational methods to facilitate the educational
process of these youths, victims of racial and economical dicrimination.
With new methodologies, we aim to call the youths to a commun
objective, decided by the community, accepted by them, towards
citizenship and development of professional skills.
This aim will be reached with the support of the Cruz Saint
Society of the Ile Axe Opo Afonja, which already has experience
working with the demands of children and adolescents of this
community. We just continue its tradition in social responsability.
