DISEASES OF THE ORAL CAVITY

I. Introduction

Sometimes it is said that--in contrast to the skin--the oral mucosa reacts in a rather stereotyped way. It is one of the purposes of the present atlas to demonstrate the incorrectness of this concept. The author is grateful to all dentists and physicians who have referred patients throught the years.

When diseases of oral mucosa are described in books on oral pathology, dermatology, internal medicine, and otorhinolarynnology, each author classifies in his own way, the students rarely get an impression of the position of oral mucosa diseases in the general framework of disease.

However, in a world so internationally oriented, as far as medicine is concerned, one should expect a maximum effort to achieve a uniform classification and terminology for diseases.

The emphasis has been placed on the clinical diagnostic aspects of the diseases; Histopathology has been dealt with only when necessary for the understanding of a given disease.
