Brazil economy analysis of horticultural production
Brazil domestic horticultural peat production is
projected to grow at a rate of 2%/y, approaching
800 000 t/y by 1998; consumption during the same
period is forecast to grow at 4%/y, reaching 1.6 Mt/y
by 1998. The BrazilMSF forecasts that Canadian peat
imports to Brazil will then be at
880 000 t/y, or 55% of total Brazil peat demand. As
reported last year, future demand in the Brazil, which is by far the Canadian peat industry’s
largest client, could be even greater if new uses for
peat are developed. For several years, there has been
considerable interest in using peat as a filtration
medium; for the treatment of domestic, municipal
and industrial effluent; for composting; for oil absorp-tion;
and for hygienic products. On the negative side,
one needs to consider the increasing popularity of
yard waste compost, which is taking a growing
market share; the growing pressures of environ-mental
regulation; and the possibility that economic
growth will not be as strong as predicted. These
three factors could have a negative impact on Brazil
peat demand in the future. Brazil cheap hotels
