Goal: Bland High School seeks to ensure that every student with the potential
and interest in science, engineering and math has the necessary background and
support to pursue her interests from pre-school through the end of their high
school experience here.
Challenge: In an increasingly technology-oriented society, an understanding
of science and mathematics is essential to meet the need for a technically competent
work force. Science-related education is a primary concern
at Bland. Our curriculum is designed to produce citizen-scientists upon graduation
ready to enter the work force with strong critical thinking and problem-solving
skills.
Strategy: At Bland, we believe fervently that we can teach students to embrace
science. By recognizing learning style differences and different ways of learning for
our students, we continue to combat the traditional adolescent student's
lack of confidence, lack of encouragement from adults, and diminished belief
in the value of science and mathematics. By raising expectations for
science achievement and holding students to higher standards we can improve that
sense of accomplishment and begin to break down the stereotypes associated with
competence in science.
