High school English teaches a love of language. This underlies every aspect of the English program: literature, composition, grammar, and vocabulary. Each in its own way fosters an awareness of, and a curiosity about, words -- individually and collectively. Composition develops attention towards purpose and audience, as well as an appreciation for style. This persists in all writing categories, whether creative and poetic, or expository and formal. Grammar study supports the maturing of a student's writing style, and meticulous study of vocabulary makes clear the power of the individual word.
The Bland English Department is dedicated to teaching students to think and read critically and analytically and to write with grace and skill. To attain this goal, the Bland English Department has developed a carefully structured program which spans grades one through twelve. Many of the Bland English teachers have advanced degrees and continue to develop their passion and expertise through summer study programs.
Bland High School's mission is to create a socially committed and morally responsible community of learners which values its students as individuals. Bland's goal is to encourage academic excellence and habits of mind, self-esteem, and leadership development among all the school's students.
