The focus in the lower grades follows the "near-to-far" approach in Social Studies. Beginning with the sixth grade, there is greater concentration on specific course content. United States History is the focus of the sixth, seventh and eleventh graders' study of history. Eighth and ninth graders study selected topics in World History from ancient times to the present. In the High School, the following courses are required: one year of World History; one year of United States History and Government.
Through variety in both content and methodology the History/Social Studies Department strives to guide Bland students toward a greater understanding of the world and to develop their own skills and talents in seeking and sharing knowledge. Considerable emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking skills through not only thoughtful reading and writing assignments, but also through class discussions, debates, interviews, simulations, and oral presentations. A greater understanding of geography is another major emphasis throughout the curriculum.
The History/Social Studies faculty, whether seasoned veterans, as many of them are, or relatively new teachers, bring to their students excellent training, a love for their discipline, and great enthusiasm for sharing it.
