Mission:  Destroy Mako Reactor #1!
Items in this area: 3 Potions, 1 Phoenix Down, 1 Restore Materia

Things start off with a bang as your main character (Cloud, as he will be referred to hereafter in this walkthrough) and several others jump off the train in the hopes of destroying Mako reactor #1. Once off the train, check the unconscious guards bodies for 2 Potions. As you follow the team off screen, two guards attack you. This fight is very easy, all you need do is attack each of them once. Once to the gate, talk to Wedge (the fat one) and he'll ask you what your name is. After they leave, follow them through the streets and into the mako reactor.

A set of security doors blocks your path.  Talk to Biggs and Jessie each time, and they'll decipher the codes for you, and allow you to pass.  After going through the second set of doors, detour to the right and collect the Phoenix Down from the chest in the room.  Now go back into the room you were in, and take the elevator.

Once out of the elevator, talk to Jessie, she'll give you a quick lesson on ladders, then get out of your way.  Make sure to grab the Potion by her new position before leaving the room.

Battle Note:  A lot of enemies in this area are machines, which are weak against the lightning element.  Use the bolt spell to short circuit them.

Once in the next room, follow the ladder downward, until you get to a weird looking thing on the ground.  This is a "save point", which allows you to save your progress in the game.  You'll be using these lots as the game progresses, so make sure to keep an eye out for them!  To use one, step on it, bring up the menu, select "save", select the slot your memory card is inserted in, and choose the file you want to save it on.

Continue up the screen until you run into a green circle-looking thing.  It's a Restore materia, the first materia you've found in the game!  You can't use it yet, but just keep it in mind, as you'll be able to soon.  Continue in that direction, and have Cloud place the bomb.  Now get ready for your first boss fight!

Semi-Boss Fight:  Guard Scorpion
This boss fight isn't too difficult. Have Cloud hammer it with Bolt spells, and Barret using physical attacks. If either of them gets their Limit Break, use it. Make sure to have them use potions on themselves when their HP gets low. After taking a good amount of damage, it will raise it's tail, and Cloud will warn Barret. At this point, don't do anything, except using potions if you need them. Attacking it will cause it to hit you with a special attack that causes tonsa damage. After a while, it will put it's tail back down, and you can finish it off.

After destroying the machine, a security alarm goes off!  You now have 10 minutes to get out of the reactor, before your bomb blows it to bits.  Run back the way you came, back towards the entrance.  Once off the elevator, talk to Biggs and Jessie again, to have them open the security doors.  If after doing this you still have some spare time, (say 4-5 minutes), you can run around and fight some battles until the time gets low, to get stronger.  When you're ready to leave, take the exit, and sit back and watch it burn, baby!

Not out of the Woods yet
Items in this area: 1 Potion

After escaping from the reactor, and listening to Barret talk, follow him off screen.  There's a girl selling flowers in the streets, make sure to buy one from her!  Ok, you don't have to, but geez, they're only a gil!  Buying one now might help you out later too... afterwards, follow her off-screen.  As you walk around, talk to some people to get their reactions to you're handiwork.  Make sure to grab the Potion before exiting this screen and heading south.

On the next screen, some Shinra soldiers catch up to you.  You can either fight or run, or just stand there, which is the same as choosing fight.  Whichever you choose, you'll eventually be surrounded, and Cloud will jump over the rail and leave the Shinra suckers behind.  And of course, it's the same train our buddies Avalanche are on.  What a coincidence.  After talking to Jessie and learning about how the train security system works, the train will come to a stop in Sector 7 slums.  Welcome home.

Home Sweet Home
Follow Barret onto the next screen, and watch as he clears out the local bar.  Speak to him, and head into the bar.  Once inside, talk to Tifa, and if you purchased a flower earlier, you can choose to give it to either her or Marlene (Barret's daughter).  Talk to the rest of Avalanche if you wish, and when you're ready to continue head for the door.  Barret charges through as you try to leave and calls for a meeting downstairs.  You can either follow them down immediately, or wait and grab a drink with Tifa before you follow.

Once downstairs, talk to everyone, and then talk to Barret.  He'll ask you a few questions about Soldier, then yell at you once again (he seems to be good at that, huh?).  Tifa tries to break things up, but yo Spiky-headed self isn't about to let that one go.  Try to leave, and Tifa will stop you.  Boring movie time.  yay.

After we learn a bit about Tifa and Cloud's past, Barret gives Cloud his payment, 1500 Gil, which isn't much.  Afterwards, everyone grabs a few Z's, even so-called "terrorists" need a break sometimes.
When you wake up the next morning, you'll have a choice when Tifa asks you a question.  Both answers will lead to a relative bit of humor.
Afterwards, Barret asks you to show him how to use Materia.  If you already know, DON'T SHOW HIM!  The stupid Tutorial is very VERY long, and not worth your time.  Unless you have no clue what Materia is, skip the tutorial, and if you're confused on anything about it, consult our Materia Guide on this site.  It'll save you lots of circle-pushing and frustration, I promise.

Exploring Sector 7
Items in this area:  "All" Materia, Ether

Before setting off on your next big mission, you might want to tour Sector 7.  It may not be here one of these days, ya know...
For one thing, the Materia shop is now open, so you can load up on some spell-casting abilities!  Yay!  You can also grab some Phoenix Downs, and Potions among other things, if you have the money.  Also drop by the Weapons Shop, it has some Iron Bangles, which are better than the armor you got now.  Buy 3 of 'em, they might come in handy.
Afterwards, contiue up the tower thing that the Weapons Shop is in, and visit the cage area.  This is the Beginner's Hall, a nice place for newbies to Final Fantasy, or even Veterans who want to sharpen up a bit to go and learn the basics of Final Fantasy 7.  You can also get an All materia, and an Ether while you're here.
Game Hint:  A good combination at this point would be adding the "Restore" materia to the "All" materia, by linking them together.  This will come in handy in upcoming fights, where mass healing is a good thing to be able to do.
