"A member of an elite military team, Squall is forced into a conflict beyond imagination.  To survive, he must contend with a desperate rival, a powerful sorceress, and his own mysterious dreams" - Final Fantasy 8, back cover of case

Final Fantasy 8 is the story of the young hero Squall, who much like Cloud from Final Fantasy 7, has a "no care" attitude at the beginning of the game.  He is soon, however, thrown into a fight that will encompass not only the entire world, but outer space and even time itself.  Through several "dream phases", we learn why Squall is the way he is, and how he connects to the young girl Ellone, a soldier named Laguna, and the Sorceress he must stop at all costs.

You'll hear many people say that Final Fantasy 8 just plain sucks.  This is mainly thanks to the new ideas Square tried out for the battle system, such as Junctioning and Drawing magic.  If you can get past the battle system that is *gasp* a little different from other RPGs, you'll find a beautiful storyline behind it.
