Final Fantasy 9 was the last Final Fantasy to come to the Playstation game console (note this doesn't apply to Playstation 2), and was a game of nostalgia, of sorts.  While it IS an original game and story, it makes quite a few references to older games of the series, which Final Fantasy veterans should enjoy.  Final Fantasy 9 was released as a tribute to the success of the series, while still being it's own game, with a nice plot attached to it.

The story starts on the Airship owned by "Tantalus" a group of actors and thieves.  The main character is a boy with a tail named Zidane, who is a member of the aforementioned troupe.  Their next mission is to kidnap Princess Garnet, heir to the throne of Alexandria, while distracting the Alexandrian queen with the play.  Things take a turn as Princess Garnet actually seeks Zidane out and pleads with him to kidnap her (it makes things a lot easier when someone you're trying to kidnap WANTS to be kidnapped.  Go figure).  Along for the ride also is a young Black Mage named Vivi, who it seems, was just in the right place at the right time.  Also, Steiner, Princess Garnet's sneaker-wearing knight guardian comes along.  So starts an epic quest that will lead the heroes across the world, and even to another world named Terra.  Also, who is the strange man named Kuja wearing womanly underwear?  Only time will tell...

This game also has a very nice battle system.  Unlike the past 2 in the series, which had rather generic characters, FF9 takes it back to the old school of battling, with certain characters only having certain abilities (Vivi can cast Black Magic, for example), which adds a greater element of strategy into the battles.  Final Fantasy 1-4 players will feel right at home.

All in all, the game is a very good game.  While many have said it's just a "remix of old final fantasy games", that's not completely true.  It is still a unique story,  despite having a lot of nostalgia value.  Oh, and on a side-note... don't buy the Brady Games FFIX guide.  It's a dirty piece of crap that has absolutely no helpful information.  We here at Besaid Island can sum up the entire strategy guide in one line:  "Go to playonline for more information".  There, we just saved you 15 bucks, aren't you happy?
