Final Fantasy Tactics is a game that crosses the traditional great storylines of
previous Final Fantasy games with the strategic and careful battling of war
games. Some war game attributes have been eliminated, the oh-so-horrible
resource management system, for one. As for the story, it is a very, very
complicated game rivaled in depth only by Chrono Cross. Many will tell you
that the story of FF Tactics is very weak, but in fact, it is probably the
deepest (albeit shortest) of any of the FF stories.
So what's it about? You play the role of Ramza, a member of the respected noble family, the Beoulves. History tells us that Ramza was a heretic, and blasphemer. But oftentimes, the truth and what history tells us are very different things. History also tells us that Delita, Ramza's best friend, was the hero of the "Lion War", which is the war going on during this time period. The story, like almost all the Final Fantasy's, starts off small and then gets big. You start off as a Young Knight-hopeful assigned with your best friend Delita and 6 others to help destroy the "Death Corps", or a group of thieves terrorizing the general public. However, with a shake of treachery from Ramza's older brother, and the death of someone close, things take a drastic turn. While we won't go into the story any more than we already did, we will say this: what we just explained is only the edge of the great story that is FF Tactics. While playing this game, you will notice a LOT of treachery. Plenty of people die in the game, thanks to the usage factor. What is the usage factor, you ask? It's a term we made up to describe the game. One of the several points in the game is usage. Who's being used, who's the one using, and how one knows that they're really the one using, and not being used themselves. Yes, that's as confusing as it sounds. The game is based on the balance of power, with plenty of people hoping to take advantage of the war and bring themselves up. Of course, there can only be one king. Thus, the complexity begins... If you're into strategy games, you'll love this one. The story, regardless of what you'll hear, is probably the most complex of any in the series (though it takes multiple playthroughs to even realize the depth is there. It's very hidden, but worth the time figuring out). If you can't stand battles longer than 5 minutes, then you're probably not going to enjoy this game. Battles range from the 10-20 minute range usually. If you've never played a strategy game before, give this one a try! It'll make an awesome addition to your collection. |
