Sephiroth is a good guy gone bad.  Or actually, a freak science experiment gone insane.  Or something.  But whatever he is, he's actually a pretty nice guy until he finds out that he is a genetically engineered guy with cells of a freaky space life-form flowing through him... that'll drive a LOT of people crazy.  So anyway, Sephiroth is the main bad guy of Final Fantasy 7, though it doesn't appear that way in the beginning.  You even get him on your team in Cloud's flash back near the beginning (though you don't get to control him).  He is responsible for the burning of Nibelheim, and is trying to destroy the Planet in an effort to become a God-like figure.  Now THAT'S not very nice... so of course as common video gaming common sense will tell you, no matter how cool his hair, we've gotta take him out.  Much of the story will revolve around him, Aeris, and Cloud, and the connection he has to the Ancients.  He is commonly referred to as the greatest video game villain of all time.
