European Regulation EEC 2092/91

On June 24th 1991 the European Council Regulation (EEC) NO. 2092/91 on Organic Production was published in the Official Journal of the EU and became legally binding on January 1st 1993. The publishing of the regulation (EEC) No 1804/99 also included organic livestock products

for Third Countries the standards on organic products in the target markets require usually an equivalence of the production regulations and the inspection procedures with the regulations of the EU. The equivalence is being controlled by an accredited certification body as BCS

The EU Regulation 2092/91 sets rules for organic production and requires anyone involved in  farming  of organic foodstuff, processing (including packaging and labelling) as well as exporting and importing of organic produce from countries outside the European Union, to be registered with an approved organic certification body - as BCS - and subject to at least annual inspections.
