All steps of production and processing have to be covered through the Certification and Inspection scheme according to the EU regulation Basic requirements for processing of organic foodstuff Generally agricultural ingredients have to be from certified organic origin. The European Regulation lists in Annex VI various ingredients of agriculture origin not yet available in organic form but can be used at a level of up to 5% of the total agricultural ingredients (the ingredients list must make clear which items are organic!). The use of processing aids and ingredients from non-agricultural origin is restricted. The EU regulation lists in Annex VI Processing aids and non-agricultural ingredients which may be used for organic products. Only those materials are allowed for processing of organic food. In case of parallel production (processing of organic and non-organic products at the same unit) an efficient system of separation has to be implemented through all steps. The EU regulation outlines some requirements for the labelling of organic foodstuff. E.g. the status of “certified organic” and the certification body has to be mentioned on all packs.
