The US Lawn Mower Racing Association hosted a regional race in Decatur, Alabama on May 2, 1999. Only one Ohio Mower Racer attended the event, but he came home with the hardware! Chuck Miller of Marion, Ohio, came home with First Place in the Factory Experimental Class at the River City Regional. Way to go Chuck!! Chuck beat out Mike Miller from Kenosha, Wisconsin (2nd Place) and Kurt Schwengle from Rome, Wisconsin. There were ten mowers total in this class which included racers from Florida, Alabama, Wisconsin, and Ohio. Sorry we don't have any pictures (at least not yet)!

A few of the Ohio Mower Racers have been performing exhibition races this year in Findlay, Ohio, at Soltz's Go-Cart Track. The go-cart racers always laugh when the lawnmowers pull in, but are amazed once they do a few laps; especially because the mowers don't seem to get "tangled up" like the carts do.

MENDOTA, ILLINOIS -- JUNE 6TH, 1999:

Greg Honchell, Chuck Miller, Larry Potenza, Trisha Potenza, Steve Sergent, and Mark Beckett (OMR Members) participated in three USLMRA STA-BIL regionals held on June 6, 1999, in Mendota, Illinois. OHIO MOWER RACERS - MADISON COUNTY RODEO, LONDON, OHIO - JUNE 13, 1999:
The OMR hosted a race at the Madison County Fairgrounds in London, Ohio. We wished we would have had a better turn out, but those who did show had a great time! For intermission, we had a golf cart racing against a 4-wheeler for the entertainment! Below are the results:

You can see in this shot the race for 1st Place in Class 3. Rodney Day (#43) and Greg Honchell (#52) had a lot of fun battling for the hardware. Greg Honchell ended up with the Victory!

A couple of the rodeo cow pokes were getting racing fever while watching us race and begged to be able to go on the track. We got a kick out of their enthusiasm!

STA-BIL FIRECRACKER REGIONAL, LISLE, ILLINOIS - JULY 5, 1999:
Chuck Miller of Marion, Ohio, attended the USLMRA Firecracker Regional in Lisle, Illinois on July 5th. Chuck has been building a new mower for the B Prepared Class and placed 5th overall. In his usual class, Factory Experimental, Chuck kicked some grass and brought home a 1st Place Victory! Greg and Sally Honchell of Urbana, Ohio, were on their way to the regional when they lost their transmission on their truck in Indiana and had to head back home! Better that it happened on the truck versus on the track, right??? :-)

STA-BIL CENTRAL NEW YORK REGIONAL - JULY 10, 1999:
Chuck Miller and Steve Sergent from Marion, Ohio, traveled to the Big Apple for the Central New York Regional in Rome, New York on July 10th. Chuck cleaned house in the Factory Experimental Class with another Championship! In 2nd place was Willy Baker from Oneida, New York, and finishing 3rd was Alan House of Johnston, New York. Steve Sergent finished in 3rd place in the A Prepared Class. Winning the A Prepared class was Mark Boyce of McDonough, Georgia, and in 2nd was Bob Cleveland from Locust Grove, Georgia.

STA-BIL MOTOR CITY REGIONAL - JULY 22, 1999:
Almost all the OMR Members attended this regional which was an "under the lights" race in Billeville, Michigan at the Wayne County Fair. This is the 2nd annual race on this hair-pinned, dirt track. Chuck Miller (Marion, OH), Nate Hendricks (Vanlue, OH), and Greg Honchell (Urbana, OH) competed in the Factory Experimental Class. Chuck also completed in the B Prepared Class. In the A Prepared Class, representing the OMR were Steve Sergent (Marion, OH), and Larry and Trisha Potenza (Grove City, OH). Trish didn't make the eliminations with gallant two attempts. STA-BIL OHIO MOW DOWN - JULY 25, 1999:
The USLMRA hosted the Ohio Mow Down at the Celina Lake Festival in Celina, Ohio. This was a really tiny oval track with a tricky gravel surface on one corner. It was set up right next to the lake which was nice. Again, most of the field was comprised of OMR members! Trish surprised them in the heat race by taking the checkered flag in the A Prepared Class! She didn't get a great start for the feature, but the thrill was still there from the previous race! Greg Honchell also pulled some tricks out of his sleeve by beating Chuck Miller in the Factory Experimental Class! Here's the final results:

OHIO MOWER RACERS WAPAKONETA RACE - AUGUST 9, 1999:
The OMR hosted this race in Wapakoneta, Ohio, as the opening for their rodeo. Horse power opening for more horse power!! This was a dirt oval in front of the grand stands. We had some excitement when some of the bulls got loose during our practice (and the bulls were kept right next to the opening of our track!!) No one got hurt, but it made it PRETTY interesting! We had a few misfortunes this race day. In the Class 1 heat race, Larry Potenza (Grove City, OH) was T-Boned by racer Steve Barber (Greenfield, IN) and injured his ribs and couldn't finish the day (and as a end-of-season note, he couldn't race the rest of 1999). Larry's wife, Trisha, had some troubles in the same race when her brake stuck which flipped her mower. Besides some scratches on the old Iron Maiden mower, Trish completed the rest of the day! Rodney Day (Columbus, OH) during practice blew a rod in his twin cylinder engine and threatened to pull the other spark plug and race in the Class 1 (8 HP & Under)! Greg Honchell just had troubles ALL DAY LONG keep his tires on. Greg must have lost a tire in every race with his Class 1 mower. Maybe he should weld them? Here's the final results:

MENDOTA, ILLINOIS -- September 4, 1999:

Greg Honchell (with wife Sally and kids Wade and Abbie), Chuck Miller (with wife Debbie), Larry Potenza, Trisha Potenza, Steve Sergent, and Mark Beckett (OMR Members) participated in two USLMRA STA-BIL Regionals and National events held on September 4, 1999, in Mendota, Illinois. These races were taped for TNN and aired in November/December, 1999. Chuck Miller drove a flawless race (and appeared effortless) at the Nationals. Steve Sergent experienced major engine problems during the first eliminations. Since Larry Potenza had brought his mower "Grave Digger" but couldn't race because of a previous race related rib injury, Larry was wanting to keep Steve in the Points Lead and loaned fellow teammate his engine! What sportsmanship! Steve did manage to stay in the hunt for points thanks to Larry's generousity! Goes to show ya, how we are competitive against each other, but when the rubber hits the road, we're all in this together!

A new mower for the OMR members entered the scene -- Trish and Larry built Trish a new IMOW racer for these events in a mind boggling two weeks before the Nationals and Trish cleaned house! Trish wants to send a special thanks to teammates Rodney Day (for the loan of a gas tank) and to Jim Miller (for the loan of his transaxle) or Trish wouldn't have been able to participate. A extra special Thanks goes to her husband/mechanic Larry Potenza for all the hours in the garage (while recuperating from his rib injury) to get the IMOW mower, affectionately called "Mowdacious", at the races!
