** Please note: The Chinese year ends on the first new moon of the following year.
In
our Judeo-Christian society, snakes don't have a good image. It
was, after all, the snake's body in which our own devil chose to hide
whilst tempting poor Eve with an apple. But in the Chinese culture, snakes
are considered both wise and beautiful, beneficial and sensual. Therefore,
my Aunt Florence's comment about her handsome neighbor who made off with
his wife's hairdresser, "That snake!," doesn't always hold true.
Snakes can be ultravirtuous people. Except of course when they are
lying. Snakes
are always beautiful. Even if they are not classically pretty
to look at, there is a quality about Snakes that makes them lovely to
look at. Snakes dress well and even a bit ostentatiously. They
apply cosmetics and drape jewelry and fix up this and tack up that just
the way it should be. Snakes have a natural talent for elegance.
They adore accessories, scarves, gloves, hats, Cartier watches,
Louis Vuitton luggage and - well - money. In
China, to tell a man that he is a "veritable snake" is the
summit of compliments. And why not? Snakes are fabulous
people. Not only do they look sensational, but they are wise. Ask
a Snake for advice and he will sit down, ponder and consider before
replying. Because Snakes have inborn intuition about almost everything,
they get a lot of hunches. They are frequently clairvoyant. What's
more, they can strike with unmitigated cheek at a moment's notice, cut
an adversary to the quick and slink away with impunity. Why
do you suppose almost all snake people are rich? They always seem to
have money coming out of their silken sleeves and yet, when you take
a good look, they don't seem to have to work too hard to come by their
wealth. It must be the charm and the inimitable attractiveness
that causes the pennies to rise from the pockets of others and float
into those elegant, decorative purses Snakes are so famous for. In
fact, if I tell you the whole truth about Snakes, I have to admit that
although some of my best friends are Snakes, they all have a dreadful
streak of laziness. Indolence is the Snake's real and only enemy.
He must fight every day to move up and forward and go and do.
Inside, the Snake has enormous ambition. But the will is
not always the way. Snake people must do daily battle with the
great god gravity, get out of their cozy beds and slither out into the
big cold world. Snakes
are possessive. No. Not possessive. Snakes are positively
feudal about their mates. They are said to roll themselves
around the loved one until the person is smothered by their enchanting
beauty and charm. Certain unsuspecting people are well-advised
to stay away from Snakes. Snakes are extravagant and are known to purchase enormously expensive items without a qualm. However, much of the time the Snake is close with his wealth and is loath to spend money on day-to-day routine items. Splurging is fun but buying the milk is a chore. The Snake likes to recline and prefers cake to bread anyway. |
