| "I deliberately left montage
out of the picture because I wanted to show that I could do other things
beside montage. It was my first show and it was somewhat difficult in that
for most of the shooting I had a great many people in one small room. But
I thought it worked. I was never keen about the three cowboys, the Magi.
I thought that section was a little coy and precious."

Es war mein erster Versuch und ein wenig problematisch dadurch, daß fast die ganze Zeit eine große Menge Leute in einem einzigen kleinen Raum waren. Aber ich war zufrieden. An den drei Cowboys, den 3 Königen, hatte ich kein großes Interesse. Den Teil fand ich etwas albern und gewollt. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| "The point I'm trying to make is that I had good
'tools' to work with. Apart from the three cowboys and the Magi, whom I thought
were awkward in their roles, everything seemed to work well. But when I saw
the completed film, I didn't like my work. It was over-sentimental, cloying
with syrup and gooey molasses. However, Warner liked it. Star in the Night
won an Academy Award as the best two-reel short in 1945. It surprised me."
