About Me
Greeting, all! Thanks for dropping by to learn a little bit about me, Sailor Figment! I know it's not a very hippie name, but it's who I am. It's actually hard to do this page because I'm trying to tell you only the most important things.
Q: Wow, SF, this page is certainly a departure from your normal type of page. No Anime or music at all.
A: This page came about after my car got sick and I needed to raise $4000 for a new engine. Ever few pennies count! It would offer what I had to the world-wide community since stuff doesn't sell in a closet!
Q: So where did the name come from? I remember something different on this page originally.. Rhymes and Reasons..
A: The name comes from my cat Squeaker and her favorite stuffed animal Honu (a Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle). She loves when I knit or sew (though she's not much into straight pins) and anything that lets me spend more time with the cat is great! She loves the outdoors. Here's a real picture her and Honu. She's part Maine Coon (hence the coloring) and we had probably just petted which is why it looks like she stuck her claw in a socket. You can probably find other pics of her throughout these pages.
Q: So hows about more about you?
A: As for me, my hobbies and interests are very eclectic and include but are not limited to the following: Japanese anime, manga, and music, knitting, sewing, crocheting, weaving, gardening, history, John Denver, CSI, reading, writing, volunteering, 18th Dynasty Egypt, traveling, hiking, being outside, hanging laundy in the breeze, my honey, my kitty, and many more things. I grew up in Hawaii, which explains a lot about me, especially my love of bright colors.
Q: You've always been an environmentalist at heart?
A: *laughter* Actually I've been trying to save the world since I first encountered the book 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth. I think that was 4th grade. I wrote a speech on global warming in 8th grade and revamped it every year into a new paper up through my freshman year in college! In the end it was 12 or 13 pages long, single spaced. I always printed on the blank side of already-used paper to make a point about recycling. My government teacher loved it! I was the president of the ecology club in middle school and also organized a white paper recycling program for my high school. I recently went back to the Hawaiian islands after 18 years and visited my favorite park, Lava Tree Park, on the Big Island. It looked Hurricane Katrina and gone through it! Trees down and uprooted; the place was trashed not at all like my childhood memories of greenery and black lava. We found out from another visitor that they were removing all the non-native plants from the park to help restore the ecosystem. It was amazing how many invasive species there were. I know plants come and go and evolve, but many planets were brought in by people because they 'looked pretty' and the native plants were being overrun. I think that's a lesson we can apply to many things. Once people realize that we're all connected maybe we can take better care of the world we live in. Recycle, Reuse, Reduce.
Q: So how long have you been sewing?
A: I have been sewing since I was very little, mostly Barbie clothes that never turned out quite as I imagined them. :-) In 7th grade I tripped up my Girl Scout leader's front steps and ripped a hole in my pants. Since my mother would not let me have holes in my pants she patched them. 13 years later I still have the pants. Please click HERE for the results. I have many other pairs kind of like that. No 2 are alike! I used to do all my sewing by hand because my mother's sewing machine and I had... creative differences. It won. After a few years, though, we have made peace and now it helps me bring these great articles of clothing to you! I recently got into hippie clothes. I like them because they look good on anyone no matter if the person is short, fat, tall, skinny or in-between. You don't need a pattern, which give more room to express your creativity!
Q: So what kind of sewing machine is it?
A: It?s a Brother VX-857 and I believe my mother got it in 1986. I asked to borrow it so I could finish a few project I had started by hand. However, I do have a sewing machine of my own that I inherited from a friend. It is a 1950s Precision DeLuxe 202 with the original belt for the flywheel. It?s in almost perfect condition, it just needs to be dusted and oiled. It?s beautiful!
Q: So what kind of quality are we talking about?
A: All of my seams are hidden and reinforced where needed. All fabrics are washed before I start and the final product is washed to test seams and such. I stand by everything I sell. I would not list something I would not buy myself. I try to keep all of my things in tip-top shape incase I ever need to part with them.
Please email me [email protected] with any questions or just to chat. I like meeting new people. Also visit the links on the left for other stores of mine around the internet.
