Hello from Room 10, Mrs. McCalmant's class!

We are a class of 4th and 5th graders in Kennewick, Washington. We are located in the Northwest corner of the United States of America. Our city is in southeast Washington where three rivers meet (Columbia, Snake, Yakima). Many of our cities and landforms are named after Native American Indians or their words.

Our school is called Amistad Elementary School (grades kindergarten - 5th). We have about 400 kids in our school.

Our country is big. It's called the United States of America. We have 50 states but 2 are not attached to the other 48 states. These two are Alaska and Hawaii.

Our country has 3 active volcanoes. One is Mount Saint Helens which is 8365 feet high and erupted in May 1981 in our state. The other 2 volcanoes are in Hawaii. Their names are Mauna Loa and Kilauea.

Our country has a president named Bill Clinton. A president can serve up to 8 years.

Hi, This is Rachel George from Mrs. Buck's 7th grade class at Keith Junior High School. I am going to be writing to you about our hobbies, interests and collections.

Most people in seventh grade hang out at our mall, The Logan Valley Mall. It is a fairly large mall and has a lot of shops that teenagers can buy cloths from.

There is also a movie theater at our mall. There is another theater right across the highway. A lot of people go to the movies very often. I myself am at the mall every weekend.

There are also several bowling alleys that people hang out at.

People in Junior High also go to many parties. There is one, if not more, almost every weekend.

Some people to go a thing called Rock'n'Bowl. That is you go to the bowling alley and stay until very late. They have a Disk Jockey that plays music all night.

Some interests are Sports, friends, and Boyfriends/Girlfriends.

In Keith a popular thing to do is to go to a friends house and just invite people down at random. It is very fun and sometimes interesting! We can get into a lot of trouble doing these kinds of things but it is worth it.

A lot of my friends are into going to high school and Keith Basketball games and wrestling matches. We enjoy watching and playing these sports.

There are many different kinds of music people listen too. Some examples are Korn, Limp Bizkit, Reel Big Fish, Will Smith, Brittney Spears, and Jay-Z. My favorite band is Passing Jym. They are not big because they don't have a CD or anything but they play a lot of concerts in my city. My sister's boyfriend is in that band.

Well, That is all for this letter but I will hopefully hear from you soon. Bye! Bonjour! Adios!

Dear keypals,

Even though we have to wear uniforms, we sometimes have dress days. On certain occasions or special days we get a dresss day.Sometimes our principal will give us a dress day near a holiday. We also get one on our birthdays. We have a dress up day, but we have to wear nice clothes. We are very luckywhen we do get one. The clothes we wear have toa modest nature.

On Dress day we can wear jeans, sweatpants, or windsuits and any shirt we want. When we have a dress up day we wear khakis or any other nice pants and a nice shirt.

Camp Rotary

Fri, 12 Mar 1999 08:42:28 PST

Hello! My name is Johanna Gomez.

I'm gonna start out with talking about an outdoor education program called Camp Rotary. Camp Rotary deals with having to adapt to the outdoors.

The types of activities that we are given are rappelling and climbing. Map and compass, winter survival. We made shelters and fires in Winter Survival. We had many other activities also.

Camp Rotary took place February 22nd through the 26th. It also took place March 1st through 5th. The reason it happened 2 weeks is because another school joins in also and it creates too many people.

As you heard it's a whole week of camp. I honestly think that I had a lot of fun making new friends there.

At this camp we sleep in cabins too. We get awards for whatever cabin is the cleanest. We call that the "Golden Broom".

When we'd get done eating a meal our table would have to set up their silverware nicely. Whatever group had it the neatest won a medal called "Golen Banana"

We had a lots of fun contests like that! Well i gotta go!

Bye!
Sincerely,
Johanna Gomez

Dear E-pals,

Hi! We are writing to you about camp Rotary. This is a camp where we learned about the outdoors. We had classes. Classes were outside for the most part , but some were indoors.

One of our classes was called winter survival. We learned how to build a fire and make shelters in the winter.

We also did Initiatives. Initiatives are mind problems, they're trick, but possible to complete, if you use teamwork.

We stayed in dorms. Actually they were big cabins that had bunk beds and two bathrooms. We stayed for a week then came back to school.

Our classes were called Nature Awareness, Rappelling, Map and Compass, Indian Lore, Pond Study, Winter Survival, first aide, and Initiatives.

All of them were fun

Dear Keypals,

Hi, my name is Charity. My classmates and I just got back from camp. it was so much fun.

We did different activities like winter survival, map and compass, nature awareness, indian lore, pond study, cross country skiing, and one of my favorites, repelling.

Reppelling is where you climb a wall and then reppel off the wall.

Cross country skiing is when you go down a snowy hill on skies.

We had night activities like a nightime hike in the woods, play olympics, folk concert, political rally, and a dance. I liked camp a lot.

In the morning we raised the flag and at night we lowered it.

We had a handicapped hike where our leaders psick a handicap for us. I was a Siamese twin. It was fun, but hard.

Charity

Dear Pals,

Our sixth graders went to Camp Rotary. It is a winter camp. we went and played games and had classes.

The classes were pond study, we played in the mud to find bugs and put them under microscopes.

One of the games we played was broom ball. That is where you use brooms and a ball and if you put it in the net you get a point.

We get lots of snow. When we get snow it is very cold and the lakes freeze. At camp we fished through the ice and caught a 34 inch (86cm) long pike. I will send a picture of it to you.

Dear Keypals,

Hello my name is Kayla. I wanted to tell you about the camp I went to. It is called Camp Rotary. I had a great time. It was a lot of fun.

I went rappelling for the first time and I loved it.

My teacher is Miss. Bathrick. She taught us pond study at camp. We made a song up to the tune of Mary Had A LIttle Lamb. Mr. Hejnal, another teacher, put a live frog in his mouth, and Mr. Smith ate Gypsy Moth eggs. We went to camp with Lake City students. I got to know some people from Lake City.

We won the award for the cleanest table, the Golden Banana, on the last day.
