The Civil Rights movement started with Rosa Parks. She was a brave black woman because she refoused to give up her seat on the bus to a white man in Mobile, Alabama. Rosa Parks was sent to jail for this. Martin Luther King became involved with helping the African-American people gain their civil rights. The black people did not ride the buses in protest to what happened to Rosa Parks. At that time in 1957, the African-Americans and white people did not use the same drinking fountains, movie theaters, cafes, and schools. Rosa Parks now lives in Detroit, MI.

Dear Keypals,

Hi, I am Kimberly, your penpal. I am going to tell you about Martin Luther King day, and Martin Luther King Jr. , the man.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man because he lead the black people to freedom in America. He helped end racism in America! The blacks held boycotts and did not ride buses in Montgomery, Alabama for one year because they were forced to sit in the back of the bus and called second class citizens of America. Dr. King organized these protests and his hero was Mahatma Gandhi, the great leader of India.

We celebrate Dr. King's birthday by having a day off from school so that we can study his life and achievements and honor his memory. Dr. King believed that people needed to work peacefully to change the system!

Dear Keypals,

In America, We celebrate a very important holiday. This holiday is called Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This day the American people come together to celebrate life and be thankful that all races in America are equal. We celebrate the achievements of Dr. King and the fact that he changed America forever!

Dr. King was a minister of a church and a black civil rights leader. He stood up for his rights and the rights of all people who were mistreated. He fought racism his whole life. He told his fellow marchers to not fight back if they were attacked while marching. He told his people to turn the other cheek. His most famous speech was called "I have a dream!" One of the great statements in this speech is " I have a dream that one day all of God's childeren, white, black, red, brown will go to school together, live together, and grow up together in peace."

Dr. King took many of his ideas from Mohatma Gandhi. Gandhi set up peaceful marches and told his people to not retaliate against the British aggression.

Many people died but the world saw what the British were doing to the people of India and they were able to gain their freedom. The black people of America followed this path and so too earned their freedom.

Dear Keypals,

Hi! I am Leimalyn. One of the occassions that we celebrate in America during January is the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was an America civil rights leader. We celebrate his birth for trying to end racism in America.

He gave a famous speech whcih said, "I have a dream," in which he stated that he hoped one day all Americans could live as brothers without looking at the colors of one's skin. Dr. King got many of his ideas from Jesus and Mohatma Gandhi. White people in Alabama made blacks ride in the back of the bus and one day a black woman named Rosa Parks said "NO." From that moment on America was never the same! Dr. King helped organized the protest that changed the course of American History.

Please keep writing,

Your friend,

Dear Keypals,

In America, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a United States national holiday. We honor the birth of a true American hero. The holiday is celebrated each year on the third Monday in January. Government offices and schools close for the day.

Historically many people asked where Martin got his ideas like to "turn another cheek" or to "protest non-violently". He said that he got his ideas from "Jesus and Mohatma Gandhi!" I know that Gandhi lead the people of India to freedom by passive resistance to the violencen of the British government.

Gandhi helped gain the freedom for his people just like Dr. King helped black people gain their freedom in America.

Dear Keypals,

I am going to tell you about Martin Luther King Jr. day. Martin Luther King Jr. is important to the people of the United States. This holiday is observed every third Monday in January. Martin Luther King tried to end racism in America. Like Mahatma Gandhi helped to free the people of India from the British so did Dr. King try to end the oppression of black people in America. Both Dr. King and Mahatma Gandhi were assassinated for trying to right the wrongs against their people!

Dr. King also wrote the famous speech, " I have a dream." On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, people take part in activites to honor his memory. Many people march in parades and recite his speeches to honor the memory of a great American!

Hello my name is Amanda Hansen.

Here is why Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is important to me.

Dr. King is important to me because he used his words to stop fights and did not use his fist.

Here is how Dr. King solved problems. When people were in a fight he used his words not weapons. His weapon was love.

Here is how Dr. King is important today. Dr. King is important today because he inspired his people and thanks to him segregation has been eliminated. Now people of all colors can go to the same stores, schools and jobs. Now blacks are getting better jobs. That is why Dr. King is important to me.

Sincerely,
Amanda Hansen

Hi I'm Amanda. I'm finally answering you about Martin Luther King. He is not a medical doctor, he had a degree in theology and he was a Baptist preacher. He was assasinated in 1968. At the time of his death he was only 39 years old. He was against violence.

Something else you might want to know is that he visited India in 1959 to meet some of Gandhi's followers.

Can you tell us about Gandhi? What did Gandhi belive? How do Gandhi and Martin Luther King compare?

Sincerely,
Amanda

Dear Friends,

Hello my name is Camoy Harding. I'm going to tell you why Dr. King is importent to me.

Dr. King is importent to me because if he didn't live I would to a segregated school. I say this because that is the way it was before. Dr. King spoke to people and his wepon was love. He stood up for black

He did things to stop rasism in the United States. He always used word instead of violence. In conclusion, I think that Dr. King should have lived longer. People learned that it's important to treat everybody with respect and that segregation was not right.

Sincerly, Camoy

Dear Keypals

Martin Luther King Jr. is important to me because he gave us freedom to the world and he also made everyone get along like for example now white people and black people will stillnot get along if it wasn't for him that's whe he is special for me. One of the things he did was he made everyone get along. White people and black people get together and be friends. He made everyone share bathrooms and share cafeteria together and eat together. A lot of people learned from him how to get along.

Another thing they stopped the fights, hitting, punching . Those are all the things he did.

Dear Friends

I'm going to tell you a bit about Martin Luther King. He was special to me becuase he risked his life to put black and whites together. He actually brought a better world. he always used words instead of violence. Although he was arrested he was always thinking of how to make the country better.

I think he's special because he was the man who made blacks and whites speak to each other. Every time he wanted to say something to people all over the country he made speeches. He always made friiends so if he was in trouble they would help him. He did the same with them.

He made a dream to have peace all over the world. He always made things easy to people to try to do it themselves. Now that he's dead people still admire him for what he did for the country.

He really made a big improvement to the country. Now black and white kids can come to the same school Now black people speak to other people instead of the their same kind. That's why he's special to me.

Sincerely,
Irving
