Dear Friends,
Memorial Day is a holdiay celebrated by United States citizens. This day is set aside to honor Americans who gave their lives fighting for their country.
Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 until it was changed to the last Monday of May. Memorial Day is also known as Decoration Day. Flowers are placed on the graves of dead American Soldiers. Also Americans don't work on this day as they pay tribute to American heroes with stories, picnics, and parades.
Thanks for telling me about the Holi Festival. I really enjoyed the story behind the holiday.

Dear Friends,
I will tell you of our upcoming holiday called Memorial Day or Declaration Day!
On memorial Day people place flowers and American flags on the graves of the military personnel who died while fighting to preserve Democracy for all Americans.
This holiday honors all Americans who died in the Spanish-American War, Civil War, Korean War, World War 1 and 2 and the Vietnam War.
This holiday is celebrated on the last Monday of the month of May. This day was made a federal holiday by law in 1971.
Thank You,
Angelica Romero

Dear Friends,
I am going to tell you about our holiday called memorial Day and also called Declaration Day.
American feel that they owe their freedom and independence to those men and women who have given up their lives in war so other Americans may remain free. It is a very sad time of the year yet it is also a celebration of life. Is a holiday that celebrates life as much as death.
Americans share the spirit of freedom with those people who are alive because of the sacrifices of their peers!
Have a wonderful Summer!
Your Pal,

Dear Friends
In the month of January we celebrate New Year's Day. This marks the start of the new year. Here in America we celebrate it by counting down to midnight. In Times Square, New York City, they have a ball on a pole that they slowly drop and when it hits the ground the new year has started.

Dear Keypals,
In the United States on January 1st is the beginning of a new year. For most people, they party in the streets in major cities. At midnight, a large ball drops from nine stories to the ground where it breaks and starts the year.

Dear Indian Friends,
I am from Hong Kong and Chinese. How is it in your country? I have been here for 10 years and am 14 years old and a freshman in high school.
Americans' New Year is different. We stay up until midnight, have a party, and drop a ball and watch it on television. The ball means the New Year coming and its a giant ball. American New Year is on January 1 every year.

Hi!
My name is Megan Traffas. I'm 12 years old and will be thirteen on February 4. I got your letter, and Makar Sankranti sounds pretty cool. We don't have any festivals like that here, but we do have a really fun festival we call Peace Treaty.
Years ago, there were only Indians living around here. Soon the white people came and there was a lot of fighting. Anyway, eventually they all signed a Peace Treaty. There were five tribes that signed. The Cherokee, Apache, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapaho. We celebrate this event every four years.
There are 3 days filled with tons of stuff to do. There are a lot of people that come, including people from pretty far away. During the day we have the reenacting of the first Peace Treaty. People from in town can be in it, each playing a special role in it. There are also real Indians who come down to play their part in it too.
There are shops all around town where you can buy really neat souveniers. We have an Indian Heritage Center where you can learn a lot of interesting stuff. At night we have a carnival and a Night Show. The Night Show tells you a little about what life was like for people back then.
Overall it's really a blast!!! You can meet a lot of new people and have a great time! Write back soon!

Hi! I'm going to tell you about Peace Treaty. It is a event that happens every three years.
The white men signed a peace treaty with the Indians. Then they white men broke the treaty.
We celabrate this by having a pagent. It is like a play. I have been in it before. It takes lots of people and time. Our whole small town has to put in a lot effort to do this. Thats why it is every three years. We have a carnival, parades, and lots of shops around town.
Oh I forgot about the Indian Heritage shop that we had this time. People come from all around to see the things that we do to celabrate. They celabrate too. I enjoy it allot, because of all the people, fun, and new things each three years.
The pagent I was telling you about is located out in the country. There is a big space for it with places to sit. It is a very important event for our comunity.
Thank you for writting to tell me about your event in your city. Hope to hear from you soon.

There is a special festival here, too. It is called Peace Treaty. We have Peace Treaty every 4 years. We had it in 1997 so it won't be until the year 2000!
Peace Treaty commemorates when 5 Indian tribes had a peace treaty it is kind of hard to explain and it is a pretty detailed story so I won't get into all of it.
When we celebrate Peace Treaty there is a carnival that comes to town. There is also a craft fair. One thing that is pretty popular at Peace Treaty is the parades.
There are also alot of good food booths to eat at. Some of the things there is to eat are roasted corn, funnel cakes, Mexican food, and a lot of GREAT tasting food.
There is also a night show that portrays an old time saloon and events.
Probably the biggest thing during Peace Treaty is the pageant. It is a show that is very similar to the real signing of the peace treaty.
A lot of people come from all over the state and country. It is a very fun event, maybe you can come sometime!
