Thanksgiving

Date: Wed, 14 Jan 1998 12:46:51 -0500

Dear Keypal,

We began celebrating Thanksgiving when the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts in 1620. The Pilgrims were from England. They sailed to America on the Mayflower.

They wanted to come to America because they wanted religious freedom. They had a Thanksgiving dinner with the Native Americans (Indians) because the Native Americans (Indians) helped them figure out how to live, eat, and how to grow crops in the new land.

At Thanksgiving dinner, the main course is turkey.

Now we also celebrate Thanksgiving every year on the 4th Thursday in November.

Hello,

Tomorrow is our national holiday called Thanksgiving. At this time, Americans give thanks for what we have or are thankful for.

When America was first settled by Europeans in the 1600's, the Native Americans who lived here taught them how to grow crops, catch fish and work the land. After gathering together to share the harvest, the Pilgrims (Europeans) and the Native Americans had a feast to give thanks. This began the first Thanksgiving.

Today the tradition continues. Americans gather with family and friends and cook and eat a big feast. Some of the foods that are eaten are: turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potato, and cornbread. Of course, many families offer other foods and family traditions.

New York City hosts one of the largest Thanksgiving Day parades. Many people participate and walk down Fifth Avenue. Giant floats and balloons shaped as famous characters such as Snoopy, Bugs Bunny and the Cat In The Hat, are pulled by strings down the Avenue.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hello!

Two months ago we celebrated Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a national holiday that is celebrated because a long time ago people called pilgrims came to the East Coast of our country from England.  They came for  religious freedom.

When they came, they had a tough time getting food.   The  Native Americans taught them how to live here.  After that, they had a big celebration and feast called Thanksgiving.

Now, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November.  Usually, it is celebrated with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.

Dear Keyur,

We just celebrated Thanksgiving. It all started a long time ago when the Pilgrims came to North America. The Pilgrims took the land.

The Native Americans didn't like it so they had a lot of wars. In one of the wars, the chief's son got hurt. The famous Indian Squanto told the Native Americans and the Pilgrims to stop fighting and make peace.  They brought the chief's son inside a teepee and the Pilgrims helped the son survive.

They made peace and had a big feast. They called it Thanksgiving and, to this day, we celebrate it.

Dear Keypal,

The Pilgrims came here for their religious freedom. The main thing they ate was turkey because turkey was a large native bird that was easily hunted.

Dear Keypal,

I am going to tell you about Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a holiday that was created by the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims came to America for religious beliefs because England would not let the Pilgrims worship the way they wanted to.

When they came to America, they met the friendly Indians that helped the Pilgrims.

One day in the month of November, on a Thursday, the Indians and the Pilgrims had a great big feast. They had lots of food such as turkey, cranberry, and stuffing. Stuffing has all sorts of stuff in it such as bread, vegetables, and a sauce.

Dear Keypal,

Thanksgiving is a holiday that was started by the Pilgrims and Indians that met after they landed at Plymouth Rock. The pilgrims came here for religious reasons.

This holiday is held on the 4th Thursday of November, because that is what day the people in this country decided to celebrate Thanksgiving.

We eat turkey and potatoes. Some other families eat fish or other foods.

Sincerely,
GRAHAM

Dear Keypal,

On Thursday Nov. 27 we celebrated Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was when the Native Americans had a big feast with the Pilgrims.  The Pilgrims came to America so they could have religious freedom.

The Native Americans taught them how to fish and plant corn.

Thanksgiving is usually celebrated the fourth Thursday in November. It is only a U.S. holiday.

Dear Keypal,

Thanksgiving is usually celebrated on the forth Thursday of November. The holiday is celebrated every year to give thanks.

The first peoule who celebrated it were the Pilgrims and the Native Americans. The year it was first celebrated was 1621.

To celebrate, we eat a big turkey with stuffing and cranberry mold.  For dessert we normally eat pumpkin pie and other pies.
