Page 3, continued - Some respondents said they are extending the operating life of their buses as a cost-cutting measure. That makes sense as long as the older buses don't require constant repairs to keep them on the road.
The average age of a contractor fleet varies widely, from very new fleets (1-2 years old) to the very old (19-20 years).
More than one-third of the respondents (36 percent) operate a fleet that is 5-6 years old. Nearly one-quarter (24.5 percent) own fleets that are 7-8 years old. Only 4 percent reported that their fleets are 1-2 years old.
Few use the Internet
Despite the burgeoning interest among the general public in the Internet,
few contractors have opted to use online services as a resource. Only 17.6 percent of respondents use the Internet to help them with their bus operations.

- Fewer than one in five contractors
said they use the Internet as a job resource.
According to the survey, the ones who do use the Internet are visiting
school transportation associations and state and federal government Websites as well as industry publications (schoolbusfleet.com and stnonline.com). They also track the latest weather conditions, obtain information from vendors and shop for used school buses. (sh)
