DANGER AT THE SCHOOL BUS STOP

Follow the bus driver's directions and practice the skill of courtesy

The more you know the more you can help keep kids safe
More kids suffer fatal injuries at school bus stops than in accidents and crashes while riding the school bus. Four out of every five children who have been killed in school bus incidents were killed as they were boarding onto or exiting off the school bus, according to the Pupil Transportation Institute.
The risk of death by the school bus can be virtually eliminated when the adults involved (drivers, parents and school staff) work together to train and encourage children to practice the bus safety rules. Always try to have an adult with the kids at bus stops and instruct children to follow the bus driver's directions.

When crossing
if you can't see
the driver,
the driver may not
see you. Even the best bus drivers can be distracted on a bus where the kids are too loud, throwing things and changing seats. The driver must concentrate on and hear what's happening outside the bus. Distractions at bus stops interfere with the driver's concentration and put children at unnecessary risk. Instruct children to:
Wait away from road and not to approach the bus until the bus has stopped and the door has opened.
Stay in seat, out of aisle, hands and things to self and talk quietly during the bus ride.
Prepare to depart when approaching their bus stop, depart promptly, quietly and follow the bus driver's directions on how to cross the road safely.
