Programming Basics

Preparation

Good preparation leads to less decision-making while you program. This in turn can lower the stress a programmer will have whilst working. Write down any decisions and solutions so that they can be referred to later for justification. Before you turn on the computer you should:

  • Look at the problem and examine what inputs and outputs are needed
    • What will the program require?
    • What will the program generate?
    • What type of variable types will you need?

  • Make a flow diagram (or at least think about what are the major decision trees involved in the task)

  • Decide what tools you will need
    • Which programming language will you use?
    • Will you need peripherals (other stuff)?
    • How will you present the output? Graphics? Text?
