About Visual Basic

Visual basic is an event-driven programming language, meaning that the flow of the program is determined by the users actions or input from other programs.  The language is currently supported by Microsoft, so a lot of resources can be found through their developers sites.  To use Visual Basic, a programmer is required to create a form or interface that is graphics-based and consists of various input devices and test boxes, but is able to support images and other forms of multi-media.

History

VisualBASIC 1.0 is heavily derived from BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code).  BASIC was designed in 1963, by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz at Dartmouth College.  As the name describes, the aim of the programming language was to make programming easier and more accessible to people who were not adept computer programmers.

Now

There are a few different forms of Visual Basic available currently.  Each variant has a specific purpose, but are largely similar in their programming style.

  • Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is included in many Microsoft products and a few products that are not owned by Microsoft.
  • VBScript is a web-based derivative of Visual Basic and is the language that is used in Active Server Pages (ASP).
  • Visual Basic .NET is the successor to Visual Basic 6.0, which gone through many iterations from version 1.0.  It is not the same as Visual Basic 6.0 and the two programming languages, although similar in many regards, are not compatible.
