The Fantasticks

The folowing are some
quotes from the movie..
When
you're near me, wonderful things come to be
every secret prayer, every fancy free, everything I dared
for both you and me....
all my wildest dreasm multiplied by two, They were you.
(From the song "They Were You")
Love! You are Love!
Better than a metaphor can ever be!
Love! You are love my mystery of love.
(From the ending song)
Happily we live and
love. No cares at all.
Happily we live and love within our castle wall.
(From the song "Gonna Rain")
Without a hurt, the
heart is hollow.
(From the song "Try To Remember")
Here is a review Amber
Alton did on the original movie by MGM, before editing...
Return of The Fantasticks
In 1960 Harvey Schmidt
and Tom Jones collaborated to write a musical comedy called
The Fantasticks. Since then it has become the longest-running
musical in the world with over 10,000 off-Broadway productions
in over 5000 American cities and 80 foreign countries. So
why did it take 40 years to make a move of it? Who knows,
but whatever the reason may be, it was well worth the wait.
In 1995 MGM filmed their version of this wonderful musical
staring new and well-known actors who give the film so much
life. There are no special effects or explosives, just 7 main
actors, simple props and costumes, and a score that touches
the heart. The Fantasticks tells a story of 2 young loves
with feuding fathers, Romeo and Juliet-like, where the characters
learn painful lessons of coming-of age and come to appreciate
a pure love even more. Young, Jean Louisa Kelly, plays the
role of Luisa, an innocent women in love. Kelly plays this
role with such emotion, it makes one wonder if it’s no cawinsidence
that her middle name is the same as her character’s name.
Joe McIntyre, former New Kid on the Block, plays Matt Hucklebee,
the young man that Luisa is in love with. McIntyre, with his
great history in the music field, captures the character as
he sings with such intensity. Joel Gray and Brad Sullivan
play their fathers who pretend to feud. These men both create
a sense of oneness between the audience and themselves through
the depth of their magnificent acting. Jonathan Morris pulls
off many tricks as he plays the role of El Gallo, the magician.
This cast is definately a work of art in itself. There have
been many articles and thoughts on this movie since word was
out in 1995 that it was in the making. Many people even feel
that no movie, actors, or director could ever truly capture
the essence of the original play. Having seen the movie myself,
and researched on the play, I must beg to differ. This movie
hits the play on the head with it’s simplicity and score.
There may be no comparison to seeing it live, but one must
not miss this wonderful screen viewing of The Fantasticks.
The movie will be played at select theaters in Los Angeles,
Boston, New York, and San Francisco and opens on September
22, 2000 for a short engagement. Check newspaper for show
times and be sure to catch it while you can.
