The needs of all age groups within the community must be provided for. Youth clubs, sports groups and other recreation bodies play a vital role in young peoples development and encourage them away from crime and drugs.
Senior citizens needs can include meals on wheels, day care, home help etc. These all must be properly staffed and resourced. Long term funding must be guaranteed and not victim to cutbacks.
The vital role played by volunteers must be recognised, but the state agencies must not be allowed to avoid their responsibilities. The cutbacks in Community Employment (CE) schemes are damaging not just to the participants but also to the broader community.
