The WJLA for sale rumors had heated up once more on the rumor-go-round. DCRTV is reporting that the new potential buyer for WJLA is Belo Corporation,
who owns 17 television stations and five regional cable networks, including on
in the Mid-Atlantic serving the Hampton Roads Area. The NewsCenter has
been hearing that Joseph L. Allbritton, owner of WJLA, has been trying to get
out of broadcasting for a while. He owned nine stations up until last year
when he sold WJXX in Jacksonville, FL to Gannett and WBSG in Brunswick, Ga to
Paxson Communications, of PAX TV fame. A potential buyer of WJLA was
Disney back in the summer of 1998, but that deal soon quickly fizzled.
Allegedly, Disney was not interested in taking NewsChannel 8 as well as WJLA,
they only wanted WJLA.
DCRTV is also reporting that Channel 7 and News Channel 8 will
be moving from their current homes and they will be moving under on roof across
the Potomac into the Gannett Tower in Rosslyn under one roof. WJLA is
based on the IntelSat Campus in the Northwest DC neighborhood of Van Ness while
News Channel 8 is based in Springfield.
