By NM Mark Holness,

PETER MYERS WINS NEW YEARS OPEN 2002

"The achievement of the Title of National Master is not the end of a chess Player's chess journey in Jamaica. In fact, it is only the beginning.."
---- Excerpt from a report by NM Mark Holness..

Peter Myers renewed his Quest for the Title of National Master by winning the New Years Chess Open held on Saturday 18-19.

Never mind that he didn't face his Nemesis, NM and Jamaica's number one Player Shane Matthews. His draw against Ladder League "King Pin" NM Russel Porter and his spectacular win in the final round against Candidate Master Equitable Brown was enough to guarantee himself the Title, with 3.5 points from four games.

There was a thrilling 5 way tie for second place between NM Russel Porter, Equitable Brown, Humphrey Gayle, Bertram Scott and Markland Douglas, who all ended on 3 points.

Markland Douglas won the category Prize for best U1800, and grabbed 170 Grand Prix Points as well. Ramon Jackson and mark Bowen were tied for second in the U1800 category.

Andrew Bent won the best U1400, while Howard Wilson won the best rural player Prize.

The next big Open Tournament will be The Easter Open chess tournament, which will take place in March.
