NM MATTHEWS LEADS MASTERS "A" KNOCKOUT FINALS 2-0
"I am Number one.." Jamaica's number one rated player, National Master Shane Matthews, now leads 2 games to nil against National Master Jomo Pitterson after winning his second straight game in the Masters A Knockout Chess Finals, on Sunday May 18, at Utech. Nm Pitterson managed to obtain an advantage with the white pieces against Matthew's Slav defense but "The magician" Matthews defended stubbornly to force Nm Pitterson into time pressure. In the ensuing time scramble, with both players running out of time, Nm Pitterson blundered a piece on the 40th move and lost the game on time. On the previous weekend Nm Shane Matthews won the first game with the black pieces, by employing the sharp Najdorf variation in the Sicilian Defense. Nm Shane Matthews now only needs a draw in the upcoming third game of their four match series to take home the prestigious title of Masters A Knockout Chess Champion.
