ROWE WINS SECOND NEW YEARS CHESS OPEN

National Master Duane Rowe made it two in row, when he topped the New Years Chess Open for the second straight year, at the Guardian Life Head Office over the weekend.

Rowe, whose last tournament victory was last year’s New Years Open, drew his final round game against National Master Jomo Pitterson, to end the tournament unbeaten on 5½ points from 6 games.

National Master Malaku Lorne took second place with 5 points, while third prize was shared between Pitterson and Peter Myers who both finished with 4 points. The best female and best junior in the Open section was National Women’s Champion Deborah Richards.

The Amateur Section was won by Charlemont High’s Mikhail Solomon, who finished with 5 ½ from 6 games. Second place went to Alando Campbell of Wolmer’s Boys, while third place went to Campion College’s Phillip Pryce.

The Women’s section was won by Iyatiti Mokube who scored a perfect 6 points from six games.

The tournament had 76 competitors and was co-sponsored by Guardian Life and CB Traders Ltd.

The next Tournament on the Jamaica Chess Federation calendar is the National Junior Championships scheduled to begin February 12.

The 2005 New years Open begins this Saturday January 29, at the Guardian Life Building (Seminar room), 12 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 5

Registration takes place between 8:00 am and 8:45 am on
Saturday morning.

The Tournament which will see 3 rounds played each day, will end on Sunday January 30, 2005.


DATE:
Saturday JANUARY 29 and Sunday JANUARY 30, 2005

VENUE:
Guardian Life Building (Seminar room), 12 Trafalgar Road, Kingston 5

SPONSORS:

CB Traders(from Portland) and Guardian Life Ltd.

GUARANTEED PRIZES

OPEN SECTION: 1st - $10,000.00 plus trophy; 2nd - $5,000 plus medal; 3rd $3,000 plus medal.

AMATEUR SECTION: 1st - $3,000 plus trophy; 2nd - $2,000 plus medal; 3rd $1,000 plus medal.

W0MEN’S SECTION: 1st - $3,000 plus trophy; 2nd - $2,000 plus medal; 3rd - $1,000 plus medal.

Other prizes include best Under 10 and under 14 year-old players, best rural player, best female player, best junior and best new player. Certificates will be awarded to all participants.

FORMAT: Six Round Swiss

TIME CONTROL:

30 Moves in the first 60 Minutes
30 Minutes Thereafter to Complete the Game.

FOR AMATEUR AND WOMEN’S SECTION - Game in sixty-five minutes.

Registration: 8am to 8:45 am.

Half (½) point bye available only for first round and will only be allowed after proper registration.(including payment of membership and entry fee).

DAY ONE (Saturday 29th January, 2005)

Registration: 8am to 8:45 am

ROUND ONE: 9 am to 12 noon
ROUND TWO: 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm
ROUND THREE: 4 pm to 7 pm

DAY TWO (Sunday 30th January, 2005)
ROUND FOUR: 8:30 am to 11:30 am
ROUND FIVE: 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm
ROUND SIX: 3:45 pm to 6:45 pm
AWARDS CEREMONY: 7:00 pm to 7:15 pm

ENTRY FEE:

Adult members - $600.00

Students/Juniors/Women - $400.00

NB: All persons must be paid-up members of the Jamaica Chess Federation.

Membership fees – Adults - $2,000 per year.

Juniors- $1,000 per year.

Membership fees:

– Adults - J$2,000 per year or J$1000 for 6 mths

-Juniors- J$1,000 per year or J$500 for 6 mths
