PRESIDENT INVITATIONAL ROUND 8 Games and Presidents Report
WISDOM
DELIVERS A DEADLY BLOW
Jamaica’s exciting former national junior champion and Candidate
Master Daren Wisdom delivered a deadly body blow to NM John Powell’s
fairy tale return to local chess after an absence of approximately eleven
years. Entering round 8 action on Saturday 30th April, 2005, Powell
was firmly in the lead with 6.5/7 with Wisdom breathing down his neck
on 6/7. Armed with the white pieces, Powell fancied his chances and
after 1.e4 Wisdom replied with 1…e5 and the parties entered the
potentially treacherous waters of the Giuoco Piano where a tense struggle
ensued until Powell blundered with 26.d5?? dropping the hanging knight
on f3 after the riposte 26…Qg4! Post-game analysis revealed that
26.Bg3 or 26.Nd2 would have held the position. Powell’s clock
gave up the ghost on move 37. Wisdom has now taken the lead with 7/8,
relegating Powell to third behind the veteran Humphrey Gayle also on
7/8.
Charging into fourth position is the talented junior Mikhail Solomon
who continued his sensational tournament by demolishing Sidley Matthews
Jr. with the white pieces in a Queen’s pawn opening to record
his sixth victory, taking his score to 6/8. It is fairly safe to say
that the honours in the eleven-round event will be shared among the
four top players. Matthews is in 9th position on 2.5/8.
Another sensational result was recorded in yesterday’s round when
young Zachary Ramsay (after going 0/7!!) played wonderfully with the
white pieces in a Queen’s Gambit Declined/Semi-Slav to checkmate
the defending champion Gary Hew in 57 moves and record his first win
of the tournament. Although Ramsay holds up the foot of the table with
1/8 his confidence must have been done a world of good by this sparkling
victory and perhaps he can finish the tournament on a high.
Lurking in the wings is the experienced campaigner Mark Bowen who helped
himself to a point after Camille Casserly uncorked yet another blunder
to lose a Sicilian with White. Bowen is now in 5th position on 4.5/8
while Casserly remains in second to last position in the 12-player field
on 1.5/8.
Young Phillip-George Pryce lost a Queen’s pawn opening with the
black pieces to Humphrey Gayle (actually played on Thursday 28th April,
2005) but remains in 6th position on a respectable 4/8.
The first game to finish in the round on Saturday was Wilkinson-Griffith,
an exciting Ruy Lopez (Steinitz) which saw Wilkinson unleashing several
sacrifices en route to mating Griffith in 29 moves. FM Grantel Gibbs,
visiting from out of town, particularly enjoyed the display. Wilkinson,
trying to salvage his tournament, is now on 3/8 and shares 7th position
with Hew also on 3/8. Griffith is in tenth on 2/8.
The ninth round to be played on Sunday 1st May, 2005, will see Hew-Powell,
Pryce-Ramsay, Griffith-Gayle, Matthews-Wilkinson, Bowen-Solomon and
Wisdom-Casserly. The players with the white pieces are named first.
