GRAND PRIX SYSTEM
RULES |
By VP JCF, Peter Myers RULES, JLUY 24, 2002
RULES OF GRAND PRIX SYSTEM ABOUT THE GRAND PRIX Simply put, the Grand Prix involves players earning points (called GPP or Grand Prix Points) from their play and performance in the Open Tournaments that are held locally each year. The points earned from each tournament (as described below) accumulate, and at the end of the year, the individuals with the highest accumulations will receive prizes (as indicated below). The Jamaica Chess Grand Prix is a bit different from other Grand Prix in that it allows those dominant in a particular category, eg. junior, female, under 1800, under 1400, ‘giant killer’ etc. to be able to compete more effectively for the top Grand Prix position alongside the top players. It is therefore possible for a female player who dominates the female prizes in all the opens to win the overall tournament or even a player who keeps scoring major upsets (giant-killer). While players are not required to play in all the opens, it is logical that playing in as many of the opens is to one’s advantage. Please note that there will be no concessions for players whose ratings fluctuate, placing them in various categories throughout the year. Wherever your rating is at a particular time, thats where you compete. Qualifying Tournaments
