Solent Landmarks  Titchfield Canal  Map  Hillhead Harbour Titchfield Haven Meon Huts

A past link with the sea.

This structure is the most visible remains of the Titchfield Canal. It is located at the head of a sea Inlet that has been blocked by shingle movement and is now an area of reedbeds behind Meon Huts.
The  three arch stone road bridge was built later on top of the lock.
A new sluice and bank above the lock basin now controls water levels at the sea lock and allows freshwater to flush the adjacent reed beds.

The picture on the left is taken from an information board at the Lock and is shows a representation of its original appearance. It shows a simple single gate lock that was opened at High water to allow access to the canal from the sea.

The site was listed in 1990 as a grade II building and was restored in 1994 by Hampshire County Council,Fareham Borough Council with help from English Nature,English Heritage, Titchfield History Society and Mr. Wood an adjacent landowner. Until restoration only the bridge was visible, the arch faces and retaining walls forming the lock basin has been rebuilt. Nothing is left of the lock gates except mounting blocks and some metal work.

Ken Davies in Titchfields canal states that this restoration is  not authentic and therefore this picture is therefore incorrect.Like many aspects of this canals history many questions still exist.
