The pectoral muscles are one of the most popular muscles that men work, second only to the arms. The exercises are relatively easy to perform when compared to more complex exercises such as the deadlift or squat.

Chest exercises are probably one of the most beneficial exercises to build the upper body. Performing the bench press can allow people to gain the most muscle on their chest out of any other chest exercise.

Almost anybody can exercise their chest, whether it be performing press up, the bench press or dumbbell flys.

Spartan style exercises

To gain fitness Spartan style, you could perform explosive press ups to gain muscle definition and explosive power in the upper body. These can be performed anywhere and are much more effective that regular press up. Instead of simply pressing back up to the top of the movement, you explode up off the ground. If you had enough upper body strength, you could even perform handstand and one-armed press ups. To build up to doing these, you could do press ups with your feet up on a bench and emphasising the downward motion on your shoulders. For one armed press ups, you should start in a regular press up postion with one hand on a raised platform at about 8-10 inches off the floor.
