The Sri Lankan Australian Malay Association was officially formed in
Sydney, in November 1998. It was conceived and initiated by Nizar Sappideen and Razikin
Dole who organised the first Sri Lankan Malay Social at Reg Byrne Community
Centre, Wentworthville, in August 1996. The function was a tremendous success and
thereafter laid the groundwork for the creation of a formal Association. The SLAMA was created with the
primary objective of promoting and preserving the Sri Lankan Malay
culture, customs and traditions in Australia. It also upholds and inculcates Islamic religious beliefs among its members.
The Association has conducted Religious, Social & Sporting events with
great success. It has received compliments and
recognition for the cultural functions depicting Sri Lankan Malay songs and
dance and its promotion of the ever popular Malay Cuisine.
The Association hopes to build on the strength and unity of its members in
achieving its goals and objectives for future generations.

SLAMA Logo designed and explained by a SLAMA member
The letters S L A M A forms the basis of the Logo and is not difficult to recognise this when observed closely. It is intermingled to depict the togetherness and unity of our members. The nature of our ancestors and ourselves having moved from one land to another is depicted by the outlines of a ship with sails in different directions yet giving the appearance of harmony and adaptability. (It does NOT represent any well known Sydney landmark!) The colours chosen are a combination of the Sri Lankan and Australian flags. Letters S L taking the colours of the Australian flag and ASTLA (shortened embedded version of Australia) taking the colours of the Sri Lankan flag. The Southern Cross is symbolic of the part of the world we now live and it in combination with the crescent represent the moon and the star(s) associated with Islamic culture. The Malay version of the name of the association has been added at the suggestion of Capt Anwar Dole and I think it is an excellent idea. Purple was chosen for this being the remaining colour of the Sri Lankan flag.
