As the name indicates, the Alpha Hydrox line is based on the use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids in their full product range. Hydroxy acids can be very effective at controlling acne and speeding up the rate of epidermal renewal (which in turn erases fine lines, age spots, and freckles). These acids also have been shown to increase skin moisture over time because the resurfacing actions of hydroxy acids stimulate the production of compounds in the skin that promote moisture retention.
Reviewers of these products have reported the line to be fairly effective at diminishing lines and pigment spots but there have unfortunately also been many reports that the products in this line are also very irritating (especially the products with a higher hydroxy acid content). This isn�t surprising considering that some of the formulas contain over 10% Glycolic Acid, which is the strongest hydroxy acid available. A 10% total hydroxy acid content is fine when the hydroxy acids used are in the right combination to one another (such as lactic acid, malic acid, etc.) because combinations of hydroxy acids have been shown to be more effective than using just one alone, especially when the glycolic acid content is less and more gentle hydroxy acids (such as lactic acid) are used. Using only Glycolic Acid, especially in a concentration over 5%, is very strong and can cause severe irritation.
This line does not seem to utilize Beta Hydroxy Acids, which are preferred for those with acne-prone skin as they have a greater absorption rate into pores. None of the formulas in the Alpha Hydrox line mention the pH of the products. A product�s pH is very important as a pH under 3.0, and especially under 2.5 can be very irritating while as a pH above 4.0 can lessen the effectiveness of the hydroxy acids.
