The pH Advantage line is based around the natural pH of the skin in the slightly acidic range of 4.5 to 6. This is fairly sound science as products that are at pH levels above 7 are more alkaline and are like detergents on the skin, while as products that have very low pH�s, especially 2.5 or below, are very harsh and irritating. So it is beneficial to have products in the slightly acidic pH range to be well accepted by the skin and reduce the risk of irritation.
But there are also some issues that can come up with certain kinds of products in this pH range. Specifically, those products containing hydroxy acids can be virtually ineffective at a pH range above 4.5. Hydroxy acids typically only retain their effectiveness at a pH at or below 4. When the pH gets around 2.5 they can become irritating, so it is very important that a hydroxy acid containing formula stay in this narrow pH range between 2.5 and 4.5 (more preferably between 3.0 and 4.0).
Unfortunately, in an odd twist of irony pH Advantage does not actually publish the pH of their products online. Their "About Us" section mentions that their products stay in the range of about 4.5 to 6, which leads us to believe that the hydroxy acids containing products also fall within this range. This is probably the reason that reviewers of this line very seldom report any irritation (since the pH range is very gentle on the skin), but at the same time many reviewers also have stated that their formulas which contain hydroxy acids were largely ineffective, even after consistent use (almost certainly, as explained above, because they are in too high of a pH range for these ingredients to work). The pH Adventage line does, however, have a few moisturizers and amino acid peptide products that reviewers have reported good results with and we encourage you to stick with those products if you are interested in this line.
