Nine names of Vedas

The nine names of the vedas are Sruti(or Anu sravam), Trayee, Amnayam(or Samamnayam), chaandas, swadhyaya, agama, nigamagama, Prushni(pristine) and Pradhamaja(first born). There are many other names to vedas depending on and describing their nature.

Sruti: The vedas are taught only from mouth to mouth. The student has to be really concentrated on what the teacher is chanting because, there should be no mistakes done in the chanting , either in content or in the meter or in the swara(the way or tune of chanting. )

Trayee : Originally the Vedas are divided into three and only later, the Atharva Veda, the fourth veda was created.

Amnaya: Mna means to study or practice . The knowledge which is to be studied and practiced.

Swadhyaya: studied through generations

Agama: the breathe of God

Prisni: pristine and pure , wiithout errors

Pradhamaja:   first born, not having a forerunner.
