Sisters Need A Place

What is SNAP?

SNAP, is the abbreviated form of the organization’s name Sisters Need A Place, and refers to the need of the Muslim community to secure a safe Islamically appropriate place within our communities’ social organization for women, whether they are victims of violence, poverty or some other crisis, or simply women wishing to expand their knowledge and skills for the betterment of themselves or their families.

The organization came into being following the grassroots activity of Muslim women from South Dakota & Minnesota coming together to establish the Minnesota Muslim Women’s Network and the South Dakota Muslim Women’s Network.

During one of these early meetings in the fall of 2000 in St. Paul, Minnesota the discussion relating to the need for an organization that could address the many cases of emergency need amongst the growing Muslim community was discusses.

As a result, it was decided by several present that it was time that an organization was set up addressing women in need. Since then volunteers have been working with Women in Minnesota and surrounding states to give them assistance.

SNAP is a 501(c)3 federal non-profit organization and donations can now be tax exempt, alhumdulillah, for those within the United States.

SNAP is a tax-exempt charitable organization. Our mission is to provide assistance to Needy women & their families for food, shelter, clothing, employment, and transportation in our communities of the Upper Midwest, as well as other persons deserving of charity under Islamic law, which includes the wayfarer & downtrodden.

SNAP achieves this by assessing, collecting and distributing obligatory and voluntary charity called zakat and sadaqa to those we work with, as well as obtaining grants and donations from the general public.

Our primary objective is to serve poor and needy Women & their families in the states of Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, & Wisconsin within the Muslim community, since it is a community group often underserved by other agencies and organizations. However we do help in other cases in the surrounding region as well when possible or when asked, as commanded by Quran.

Our work is not solely for Muslim women, but focuses on them due to the suffering we have witnessed amongst them due to barriers in communication, culture and understanding. We do not refuse assistance to any woman based on religion, nationality, language, ethnicity, culture or other factors that are protected by law be that law Islamic or civil. Our goal is to empower and to provide a safe place for women in general.

Islamic charity is grounded in the Qur'anic verses (2:177):

"It is not righteousness
That ye turn your faces
Towards East or West;
But it is righteousness--
To believe in God
And the Last Day,
And the Angels,
And the Book,
And the Messengers;
To spend out of your substance,
Out of love for Him,
For your kin,
For orphans,
For the needy,
For the wayfarer,
For those who ask,
And for the ransom of slaves;
To be steadfast in prayer,
And practice regular charity;
To fulfill the contracts
Which you have made;
And to be firm and patient,
In pain (or suffering)
And adversity,
And throughout
All periods of panic.
Such are the people
Of truth, the God-conscious."

SNAP seeks to assist Muslim families by utilizing various community programs and resources, but within the guidelines of the Quran and Sunnah.

Our organization’s work is administered by a board of directors, who meet several times each year.

The general operations of the organization are oversaw by the executive director, the finance director, volunteer director and the volunteer staff.
