Newport catches the fancy of young
smokers! Newport cigarettes, Lorillard’s leading product, was introduced to the market in 1997. The Greensboro, N.C. based Lorillard Inc. is the USA’s fourth-largest cigarette manufacturer. Founded in 1760, Lorillard introduced the first blended cigarette, Old Gold Label, in 1926. Then in 1992 they again broke new ground by debuting Kent to the market. Kent was the first filter cigarette on the market. Newport cigarettes are the No. 2 cigarette brand in the United States behind Phillip Morris's Marlboro. The taste of menthol Newport cigarettes are just one of many ‘menthol’ brands on the market, which collectively account for about 25 percent of the cigarettes sold in the United States. Newport cigarettes became the most popular in the menthol category in 1993. Newport cigarettes, by 1983 had the youngest franchise of any brand, with 53 percent of sales to people aged 18 to 24, and it had doubled its penetration of the young African-American market, according to a RJR document. Newport cigarettes are especially popular in the northeastern USA. The market for menthol-flavored cigarettes — a mint-tasting extract also used in cold medicines — is dominated by Lorillard, a unit of Loews, of New York. The Newport cigarettes brand, which accounts for more than 8 per cent of all U.S. cigarette shipments, up from 6.5 per cent in 1997. Lorillard Tobacco Company is the nation’s fourth largest cigarette manufacturer thanks to the Newport cigarettes brand. Newport gains popularity among teens Heavily-advertised Marlboro, Camel and Newport cigarettes dominated the teen smoking market between 1989 and 1996, according to a new study by Karen Gerlach of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which found that the percentage of teen Newport smokers doubled during those years. Newport cigarettes contain menthol, which may make them less harsh-tasting and easier for experimenting teens to smoke. |
