Launched in 1933, Kool cigarettes was the first menthol brand to gain nationwide distribution. Catering first to a small niche market, Kool cigarettes quickly became one of the world's most famous menthol cigarettes.

In 1981 Kool ultra lights cigarettes made their first appearance. In 1996 it partnered with racing star Barry Green for Team Kool Green, sponsoring two American drivers in the Indy Lights championship.
The following year Kool Cigarettes moved to full participation in the Cart racing series.

In 1997 Kool sponsored three Indy Car race events in Cleveland, St. Louis and Japan. In the next year Kool Cigarette was launched nationally with a new packaging featuring the waterfall. Kool Natural brand Cigarette was also launched.

In 1999 the Kool Race Tins were introduced nationwide for a limited time. In the next year “The House of Menthol” advertising campaign was launched. As late as 2002, Kool Cigarettes made another change in packaging, which was launched nationally.
