After watching Charmy's acknowledgement ceremony, Julie-Su, Vector, Espio,
and Mighty returned to the Floating Island. Elsewhere, Knuckles discovered
powers that neither Locke nor Sabre have ever witnessed.
Lara-Le leaves the Aurorium and walks back to her apartment. To her
surprise, Knuckles is already there. Lara-Le hugs Knuckles, and Wynmacher
allows the two to catch up as he prepares dinner. Meanwhile, an aircraft
enters a holograph-cloaked portal at the bottom of the Floating Island.
The aircraft lands on the Flight Deck of Haven. Sabre welcomes Tobor,
the last member of the brotherhood to arrive.
Lara-Le repeats what Knuckles told her earlier: he arrived home by
creating a tunnel of energy. Knuckles asks if she can explain why
it is possible. Lara-Le begins to recall the past, beginning with
Knuckles' birth. When Knuckles was born, Locke would not let Lara-Le
see him until a doctor ran tests to make sure he was fine. Usually
three days would pass before an echidna hatches, but Knuckles hatched within
a day. As Knuckles began to grow, he showed greater intelligence than
others his age. Knuckles began his schooling when he was three, and
Lara-Le told Locke she should also help raise Knuckles. Locke insisted
that all of his ancestors were brought up this way, so Lara-Le asked Jenna-Li
(Knuckles' grandmother) for advice. Jenna-Li explains that relationships
are based on give and take and tells Lara-Le she should serve as an example
as to who Knuckles can become. When Lara-Le asked if Jenna-Li was happy,
she replied that she would be lost without Sabre. Afterwards Lara-Le
tried to follow Jenna-Li's advice, but she eventually realized that she was
raised differently. Now that she is older, Lara-Le is different from
how Knuckles remembers her.
The Brotherhood decides to catch up on recent events. Tobor begins
by recalling events in the Dragon Kingdom, which was peaceful except while
Sonic and Tails were there (see Sonic the
Hedgehog #60). Thunderhawk is upset remembering the cleaning he
had to do in Downunda. Before Sojourner tries to outdo Thunderhawk's
recollection of Sonic, Sabre gets things under control to discuss the current
situation. Currently, Robotnik's main robots are trying to claim areas
of the planet while others try to get on with their lives. Sabre asks
for a suggestion from the Council of Advisors. Deo Volente explains
that the Brotherhood believes they are not focused. Deo's son, Semper
Fidelis, adds that the guardians always focus on the Floating Island while
the Brotherhood focuses on everywhere else. The Brotherhood can either
continue what they are doing or become a driving force in leading not only
echidnas but other species to a better life.
Wynmacher serves dinner, which looks like a pile of rocks. Knuckles
tries the dish and asks if they always eat fancy food. Lara-Le explains
that it is a special day, and Wynmacher says they would Knuckles to join
them in their happiness. When Knuckles does not understand, Lara-Le
explains that Wynmacher asked her to marry him and she told him yes.
Knuckles throws down his fork and runs away. Lara-Le wants to go after
him, but Wynmacher stops him and says he should be left alone.
Knuckles runs outside past the Chaotix. Julie-Su says she should
go after Knuckles, which angers Vector. Vector thinks that Knuckles
may find himself in trouble. Espio assures Vector that everything
will be fine as Julie-Su walks toward Knuckles.
Sabre says that their new problem is Knuckles, who used great powers at
young age. When some of the members begin to scoff at the situation,
Spectre speaks up and says he warned Locke against interfering with nature.
Locke becomes upset, and Sojourner explains that if Spectre is concerned,
then they should all take the situation seriously.
Knuckles sits on a dock and watches the water below. Julie-Su approaches
Knuckles and asks him if he wants company. When Knuckles refuses,
Julie-Su sits down next to him. As Knuckles protests, Julie-Su gives
him a kiss on the cheek. Knuckles demands to know why she kissed him,
and Julie-Su explains that she returned the favor for when he tried to cheer
her up (from Knuckles the Echidna #7). Knuckles
tells Julie-Su never to kiss him again, and she says she wouldn't even think
of it. Julie-Su then thinks that she would think about it, although
she doesn't know why. Knuckles thinks the kiss felt sort of nice.
